Big Bash - AFL Style

A PUSH is on to create a new hybrid footy tournament featuring recently retired stars to potentially rival cricket‘s big bash.

Organisers have so far approached television networks with little success, but remain hopeful they can get the concept off the ground by 2016.

Nick Maxwell, Nathan Brown, Matthew Richardson and Brendan Fevola are among the former stars believed to have been approached.

Other players in the sights of organisers include Jonathan Brown, Wayne Carey, Alan Didak, Darren Glass and Peter Everitt.

It‘s understood several parties have signed confidentiality agreements with a group of businessmen behind the plans.

Free-to-air broadcasters have been reluctant to get involved because of upcoming television rights negotiations with the AFL, meaning the consortium may need to pin its hopes on a pay-TV channel.

More discussions are set to take place in the coming weeks.

The exact format of the tournament remains up in the air, but AFL.com.auunderstands the latest proposal is for a single weekend tournament, in the vein of the successful rugby sevens format.

It is being sold a fast, TV-friendly game, featuring privately owned teams filled with star players and large salary caps.

The number of teams is yet to be finalised.

Organisers are also keen to include female athletes within the format.

Trials took place at Melbourne's AAMI Park in June, and organisers believe the concept will be a hit with fans.

It is likely games would be played over two halves, with teams of ten players on the ground with two on an interchange bench.

It is understood the AFL has not yet been consulted about the competition.

Stupidest idea ever.

AFL is ALREADY TV friendly and fast paced. Something cricket (very arguably as i love cricket) was not before T20.

Edit: Also, yeah lets bring Jono Brown back for some more concussions! Great idea

copying america because australians love american sport

should note i like basketball, but don't think the pomp and ceremony has any place in our great game.

So… They want to monetize the EJ Whitten Legends match format?

Will watch.

I would give it look, and see what it's like.

If I like what I see, would probably give it another look.

Has anyone ever complained that there's not enough football?

Wow Darren Glass. I have missed all that spectacular stuff he does like…umm…

It's bad enough once a year.

Am with Digs … Will watch.

More inclined to watch if it had nothing to do with the AFL.

Holy ■■■■ we will DOMINATE

Its been done before.....the winners get the Patra Orange juice, and the Huttons Ham.

l watched the curtain raiser to the 1996 centenary match btw EFC and the Cats, aka the legends game. In that game they scored extra points for a goal with a place kick. It was all done in the name of fun and one off. There is a limit to how far you can push the product. What we have already is sufficient. l wouldn't bother watching it.

Only as long as they bring back the biff.

Are they also going to force the players to play in

skimpy outfits too a la Lingerie League?

Hope this doesn’t happen as it will further dilute

the game such as the GWS and Suns already have.

Quality not quantity please.

Skimpy outfits....hmmmmm.....wouldn't mind Chelsea Roffey as a goal umpire but don't really like the mental picture of Darren Jarman in lingerie!

Speak for yourself mate.....just kidding......sort of.

Sounds ■■■■■■ awful.  No current AFL listed player will get involved because they will be deep in pre-season & we already have a mock game for these retired players, it's called the EJ Whitten Cup.

Lightning Premiership Part 2.

She's honestly not that great. If she wasn't the only bird amongst 50 people on a footy field, wouldn't rate a mention.
