29 to 16 …
Imagine we got 13 more frees than them. Yeah another 26 frees. Would we have won by 3 points? I’m guessing more.
Watching the replay, smith was giving ‘feedback’ all game to the umpires.
at one stage, smith got called for front on contact on hickey )after he had dropped the mark.
Then he got called for a 50 for moving oh the mark, after hickey had disposed of the ball.
The ball ended up in our pocket and the same umpire pays a soft high tackle giving them a shot on goal.
Smith should stop antagonising them. It can’t gain you anything but if they are unprofessional (like this ump clearly is) it can cost you a lot.
Depends. I reckon Francis complaining to the ump early about being slammed into by Franklin off-ball resulted in him getting a free not much later.
Our 2000 premiership team were one of the worst perpetrators of abusing umpires.
One of my mates was an AFL umpire back then, and he’s also an Essendon supporter… said that they were relentless when it came to mouthing off at umpires. He said it was the worst that he received during his career.
Good!
They hated anything else on the ground that didn’t wear red and black
Don’t agree with this. If umpires are going to retributively pay bullshite frees because their feelings got hurt, they shouldn’t be an umpire.
Should Smith stop, yes of course. But hey, at least one person in the EFC is standing up to it
I’ve never seen an umpire make a decision, a player whinges about it, and the ump changes his mind. They all seem to do it for almost every decision, all for 0 gain. The only benefit I see is that maybe, just maybe, if they do it enough they’ll get inside the ump’s head and the ump might second guess himself before making a 50/50 decision, but as you say, there’s a whole lot more to be lost if it goes wrong, and being Essendon playing interstate against ump 32… a lot can go wrong.
Also, the opposition are getting very good at taking advantage of a distracted infringing player arguing at the ump, looking at the scoreboard for a replay etc, and just quickly playing on. We’re probably better off if we just accept the ump’s decision (because we know we’re not going to change it,) ignore the urge to explain to the ump why he’s a moron, and instead focus on manning up the opposition.
That’s our job as supporters!
It’ll be 5 once we make the finals.
We absolutely copped the raw end of the deal on Thursday. 100%.
It’s funny though how quiet it was in here after round 1 and round 3 when we got the rub of the green. Including round 1 when we won the free kick count by 13.
Constant discussion around umpiring is one of the most boring and pointless exercises ever.
Well it did happen - and ironically Sydney were on the opposite end of it.
Only because the AFL were rewarding Smorgon for his loyalty.
If you love the umpires so much, why don’t you marry them!
From memory, it was also one of the few times in the past twenty years that the premier has been on the wrong end of the free kick count for the season.
Are AFL clubs allowed to appeal results? The Rampe one is an obvious one that should have been appealed.
No.
Sportsbet already paid out on Sydney.
Sportsbet don’t take bets for local footy so those can be overturned.
That makes sense but still seems bizarre that gambling agencies dictate the result and not the other way around.
