That is the most bonkers interpretation of the rule. The rule is intended to stop people from diving on it and creating a “stacks on the mill” scenario. When a player dives on it and gets back up, that is exactly the type of scenario the rules should be encouraging as they are more likely to get it out and keep the play flowing.
How the umpire couldn’t see that was a throw is beyond me. Cost us a goal as well. I really don’t understand how 4 umpires miss so much - how could Perkins have been holding the ball when he had no prior. Just so inconsistent and extremely frustrating. In the Perkins case the umpire closest called pay on. Reckon in this circumstances they should call a ball up. How can someone 50 meters away have a better view than someone 20? Ridley was paid a free either was he? Again what is the purpose of having 4 umpires if they don’t pick this stuff up. Also the boundary umpire on the behind review was right there would have heard the ball brush the back of the post let him call it.
We would be far better off having 2 umpires and then allowing the boundary umpires make obvious calls. Will never happen unfortunately.

Been some astounding umpiring tonight. Of course it’s not like they cost us the game, but some absolutely unacceptable stuff. The top three for mine:
• Hipwood throwing it just before half time. He flat out threw it. An absolutely joke, and there were plenty more throws, but this most obvious.
• insufficient intent against Martin in the second. Gets swung around in a tackle while handballing. He has to get rid of the ball by handballing it. He does. The tackle directs the ball to the boundary line. Ump reckons he didn’t do enough to keep it in. ■■■■ off.
• calling advantage to Brisbane in the last then decided nah we’ll call it back. Since when can the umps change their mind?

I swear we have a different set of rules for our games. Anyone else notice our player get called “back to the 9” when the ball wasn’t even in the goal square. They were kicking it from the boundary line in the pocket & the umpire called the player back. Never seen that before & of course the next time we had the ball in a similar situation it wasn’t called again.
That is a very interesting question. Almost as deep as the fundamental philosophical question of “why is there something rather than nothing”.
Can be tackled on many levels. DO umps have a mind? If so, what evidence is there that they change it? [“We have always been at war with East Asia”]. What eveidence is there that they change there minds to accommodate what they see in front of them [e.g. Rampe climbing goalposts) vs what they have been told to produce [i.e. wins for favoured clubs}. And so on and so forth.
Should just get rid of umpires and do it all remotely. Announce free kicks through a PA system that sounds like the announcer from Halo.

Our player got called back to 9 and was standing about 30m away from goal. That’s a new one as far as I could tell.
I can’t remember watching a game where I thought 1 team got away with so many blatant throws, maybe it’s time for another vision test and stronger glasses.
We got a 50 to Redman in the 2nd quarter for their player not coming back to the 9
I’m still dirty they didn’t pay a blatant throw against the lions about 20m out from our goal when we were only 7 points.
But the shittest one was when BZT was going backwards to take his kick in the D50 and they called play on.
