Just checked out info about the Koel. Looks very much like my spangled drongo who returns each year (with a partner this year ) and it sounds almost as distinctive as my catbird who lives in the bush land behind my place. I wake to his “dulcet” craw sound most mornings.
Hope BF manages to spot her Koel.
Heard it (him) again a few times today.
Bottom of Bembridge Ave ,Frankston South, in the creek reserve to be precise , if you go hunting.
Morning seems best.
Just back from a trip to the Glenrowan region and BH managed to pick up a couple of lifers.
#259 Eastern Shrike-Tit - Wangaratta.
#260 Turquoise Parrot – Chiltern.
Also captured one of her favs in Glenrowan.
Great pics. We have the rainbow bee eaters at home. A rainbow flash as they flit across the back yard. They’re amazing to watch dive from the tree branches for flying insects.
There were 5 or 6 of them in a massive dead tree in the Glenrowan Tourist Park and, just as you describe, they were zipping out and around and then back for a few moments, before darting off again. Truly great to watch.
BH’s fav birding event from our Glenrowan trip was capturing this desperate male Satin Bowerbird’s pick up routine. You’ll note the female has entered the bower but to be honest she seems less than impressed with this fellow’s blue bottle top ring as he dances about in front of her.
Note: BH made sure she was well away and using a zoom so as not to disturb the ritual dance.
Very special.
Had a friend in the Dandenong ranges who had a bowerbird nest in her backyard. She left blue bits and pieces outside for him. It’s such a quirky thing that they do.
His blue ring top is gorgeous (hopefully someone left it for him rather than just litter)- I’m sure she appreciated it - just a female playing hard to get. It’s a pity we can’t post videos.
Lapis lazuli is so hard to replicate as a colour ( and expensive). Birds have to settle for cobalt imitations
Had to look that one up. Learn something new everyday!
Blue bits and pieces had been left so I don’t think it was random litter. It also used the blue cap. Neither seemed to be doing the trick.
PS BH does have a short vid but I don’t think they load here.
No, I’ve tried to load bird vids and it won’t work. You’d probably need a YouTube account and then link the clip to here.
All beyond me
a starling definitely
Great Pic, Saladin. BH reckons they’re Ravens though.
Lapis lazuli only known to me from reading Deltora Quest to the kids!
