Cayley’s What Bird is that? Or perhaps some Gould League book? Or something else?
Yeah, it’s a Gould print.
It also has a football connection: it was previously owned by Geoff Edelsten.
That seems like there would be a story attached?
I once knew a Cayley who was a mad Essendon supporter……
Not as interesting as it could have been.
Edelsten had inherited Gould’s original collection of prints. In the ‘80s, like other cowboy capitalists of the time, he got into financial difficulties. So he had to sell off the prints to avoid bankruptcy. There was a big auction held at the Jolimont hotel near the MCG. We were lucky enough to get a couple of the least expensive ones.
Currently in Crater Lake Rainforest Cottages (costs an arm and leg but my word it is gorgeous, absolute birders’ paradise-BH’s Mum funded it, bless her heart) and BH has spent the whole day on birder camera sniper duty on the verandah. Hasn’t seen a Wompoo yet but has heard it several times. I’d post her audio if I knew how.
Hoping for Cassowaries ?
Definitely. But have seen one in the past. Number one target is the Rifle Bird in full fan.

Wedgies might attack kangaroos, but this magpie shows 'em who the boss really is.
Portland photographer Darin Roos in the right spot at the right time once again.

Vacant block at the end of our road with plenty of cover fortunately is now home to a Masked Lapwing (plover) family with 3 chicks.
Photos aren’t great sorry - some of the parents and chicks and a couple where the chicks are hiding under mum/dad.
#Wompoo Fruit Dove - Crater Lake Cottages, Lake Eacham FNQ. BH finally saw rather than heard the Wompoo today, but at serious height. She lives in hope of a better shot.
#Papuan Frogmouth - Julatten FNQ. This handsome fellow is the main reason BH wanted to come to Julatten so it was a relief to see him today. Clearly closely related to the Tawny but bigger and with distinct colouring and markings. Locals told us he had a partner a few years ago but she has disappeared.
Probably got sick of him Papuan in the nest.
#Cassowary and chick - Dawin (Next to Cape Tribulation) Driving back from Cape Trib today when I saw queueing traffic ahead in the approaching lane. First thought it was road works but then we spotted the massive bird and its chick. As expected most people viewing were tickled pink. Not the old pricck 2 back who you see pulling out abruptly in the final solo pic of the chick, held up for 90 seconds tops and the birds were clearly crossing over. He missed the chick by inches. BH, who was out of the car snapping pics, paused long enough to present him with her middle finger and call him a Farcking A-hole as he passed. Love it when she fires up.
Dinosaurs extinct - I don’t think so . Truly magnificent creature . And super cute chick.
#Riflebird - Lake Eacham. Before we set off for FNQ BH told me that top of her wish list was the mating dance of the Riflebird. I reckon mission accomplished but BH says partial success only. We watched these males displaying full fan on top of a power pole for ages but BH says it doesn’t quite count because both birds are adolescent males taking it in turns to dazzle the other, talk about gender bending. Rehearsal maybe but bloody hilarious all the same.
