Yep. I’ve also never heard someone articulate one of our key problems as well as Brad did in that article.
Our players have just been content to be on a list. They haven’t needed to put in the level of commitment required to be competitive because it was never really an expectation. We will see the biggest change just based on destroying this mentality without the club.
Yeah I don’t think we will be either. Also he made the comment that they had people call them wanting to see if they could come, they said no to all that and just went to the draft. So that tells me they will probably do that again this year.
There’s two more larger than life figures at the footy club who have to go. Can Brad Scott make that happen?
I hope so.
Laters, both Sheeds and Dodoro.
I might add that it seemed to me he wants to see the list this year, see all the existing senior players, and then at the end of the year clear a few off. So we may well see a number of players who we do not think are up to it playing AFL this year.
No doubt. And that’s why I am in the minority sticking up for our recruitment over the last decade as an example. They were never going to deliver on field success when the clubs higher purpose was focussed in the wrong areas, broader decision making was built around a low performance culture and conflicting themes and direction. And a footy department where resources weren’t being channeled into the right areas.
There’s a lot in that article pointing to much deeper issues that who we recruit, and why? That’s why cultural shift as Brad calls it, is so necessary.
I think that points to what others are saying, he wasn’t up to the task. He was caught in between power people and couldn’t do anything about it. He was not set up to succeed and he was not good enough or strong enough, this time out, to succeed.
I’m a bit the same in sticking up for Murphy. It’s easier to say a person isn’t good at their job rather than trying to understand why a department is underperforming
I got that picture with Reid, but it seems like there isn’t confidence in the others down back (like Cox and Baldwin).
They are playing in the backline because it’s what makes the most sense for the overall development of the side/list…but I don’t get the sense Brad sees them as long term defenders.
Ben McKay would be significant upgrade and would be considered. He’s in the right age group, just like Weideman was.
I got the impression we won’t be chasing big names for the injection of optimism and at the cost of our future (high draft cost). Ben McKay isn’t that type. Plus he will be a free agent, likely to only cost the club salary cap (which we have a ■■■■ tonne of).
Yeah, X was brought in to clean up the financial mess. And he did a pretty good job at that point. However they kept him in a power position too long with too much say and kept the focus on making money. Brasher fell over badly in that regard. He made all the right statements but his actions behind the scenes was very different.
My point being some in the media stoke fans and create an expectation Essendon should be aspiring to make finals whilst accepting change is required. Mick Malthouse will defend his prediction last year, however Essendon was never equipped to win a flag. And everyone’s expectations are built up. Fans alike. And all of a sudden Essendon should be making finals.
Someone said late last year around when Rutten was sacked that it’s intriguing and perplexing as to why so many really good football people get shown the door or leave Essendon…
I suspect Rutten is an example of a good football person. And I also suggest that Rutten may well be a successful senior coach in… Wait for it… A high performing footy club with a great culture… Snd that’s the point.
He specifically said Reid and Cox playing down back.
‘‘When we get Zach Reid back in our side, we want him back for good. Cox fits into that category too. They won’t play in the early rounds because we’re not going to take a short-term view.’’
This also shows that recruiting doesn’t just fall on the list manager’s shoulders.
It is a group head think.
Yes, Dodoro puts forward options, but it would have more than just 1 or 2 people’s ‘buy-in’ and would also have to tie into various strategies. Whether that club (character, background, etc) or coach (defensive setup, playing style, etc).
And before this gets into another Dodoro diatribe discussion…
Yes, I have no problems if he’s replaced.
