There was some Essendon fan sitting the row in front of me who left nearly in tears. He’d been horribly obnoxious to some Collingwood fans (who had done nothing to elicit that behaviour) sitting next to him in the third quarter.
I did have the thought of “well, serves you right” as he was leaving.
Last time it was like that was 2000 that’s how long we have been ■■■■■ for. other clubs have rebuilt multiple times and had success while 20 years later we are still trying to work out how to play consistent good footy week in week out.
I’m praying that this all changes now under Brad and co
Pies demonstrated on numerous occasions over the last two years that they had an inner belief to win any game from any position.
So all 17 teams must be mentally weak (whatever that means) or the Pies simply need to be recognised (reluctantly) as a very special team that also just happened to win the 2023 flag.
They also lost the 2022 prelim by 1 point.
Lucky they haven’t already gone back to back.
Our CLUB cannot hold a candle to the Pies over the last 20 years.
Whats important in terms of list demographic is not the average age, its the number of best 22 players over 30.
If this number is greater than 9, that club is headed down the ladder.
Essendon : 3
COLLINGWOOD : 9
GEELONG: 11
In the case of the Pies, Pendles, Howe and Sidearse are above 33.
Geelong went down last season and will stay down for 2 or more years. IMO.
Interesting that Brad Scotts philosophy is the players have to agree to meet objectives and the coach is there to hold them to account.
A bit of a contrast to Worsfold who towards the end of his tenure said a number of times it was up to the players to have the desire to win.
So, it seems Brad is quite a bit less “lassez-fair” than the last coaching regime.
The concept of a professional AFL lifestyle is an interesting one…
As long as the fans recognise that in action. When he doesn’t play and moves on Voss and Menzie for not meeting standards and picks Heppel and Kelly every week because they do meet standards, the fans generally loose it.
The fans idea of standards is often different to the coaches.
