Brad Scott - yeah, whatever (Part 3)

he referenced Scotts standards
preseason trip, and cancelling Ibiza plans etc
and mentioned lots of metrics that Essendon were doing well

Why do we keep finding ourselves in these positions against ■■■■ opposition? Lloyds answer is because we arent that good just look at percentage.
Because our defenders push so far up and let their man be 20+m away we are prone to players getting easy goals out the back if they have superior leg speed.
Basically we get crucified on turnover. But also rarely score goals when we get turnovers in the front half. I put a lot of our poor results from forward turnover down to leg speed, with barely any forwards able to get any real separation from their direct opponents and thus easy ball. We essentially rely on the Wings running down and getting a easy mark. plus you would add poor disposal kicking inside 50.

He may well have gotten insights from Jordan Lewis who was on the coach selection panel

WEEEEED

I feel the need…

Maybe Jordan Lewis told him.

see this is the misleading part, people say oh it took 2 years hodge, neale and co. while technically true it was more than just that.

Their recruiting changed to focus onI believe more country type players to help with the transition to playing in brisbane.

A big key however was also moving away from older type players that weren’t cutting it, or somewhat established players in the same boat.
a quick search from brissies list from circa 17/18 they moved on from guys like
beams
rockcliff
lewis taylor
christianson
etc etc

they kept a few senior players around plus added hodge to set the standards, but the big and main difference is, they backed in the youngsters to build and grow from that example they were using and trying to set with getting hodge.

mcluggage
rayner
berry
hipwood
macinery
bailey
and a bunch of others.

So essentially what brisbane did is have a few senior players to set the standards (hodge, rich and a couple of others)
They then had 4-5 year decent players with the right mantra that fit the moving forward in guys like andrews, mcstay, robinson etc
and then had a whole bunch of talented young kids they backed in.
they then when out and targetd quality players to fill holes along the way.

it can take a short time, if you do it right.

Compare that with what we are doing.
backline
bar martin every other player down there as a staple this year, has been in the system 8 years or more (mcgrath and ridley being the youngstest starting in 2017)

midfield
bit harder to judge, but merrett, parish, shiel, setterfield, goldstein been in the system 8 plus years, draper is at 7 years I believe

forwards
stringer, langford, wright, gresham all been in the system 8 years, guelfi 7

do you see the differece ?

one club went and backed in youngsters with talent, and mid term prospects who either had exhibited talent or leadership, and got in even better leadership to guide the ship and build a culture around that with the youngsters.

we believe we can change 26 plus year olds bad habits, by surrounding them with a handful of youngsters here and there.

that’s why people ultimately get annoyed, it’s not even remotely the same situation we are in compared to any situation hodge was involved in.

He also said they are preparing for the season to be ‘much longer than just the next two weeks’ or words to that effect and that Ridley and Guelfi are pushing to be back next week.

I just do not understand the logic of any of it.

Would it be against Player Union rules to continue training through the finals series?
Rehab definitely continues through, but I’m not sure if training can continue (definitely didn’t last year).

Yeah there’s a mandatory break and players aren’t supposed to be in contact with coaches formally iirc

He’s suggesting that we are pushing to play finals (not that we will continue training once we are out).

I understand the implication. It just seems wildly optimistic and pretty pointless.

maybe it was meant as a practice example that if in future years we are actually improved and pushing deep into finals, players in their position would have to be training fully and properly and rehabing properly to get back for finals.
instead of the usual oh well we aren’t making finals so just take it easy.

depends on the context it was meant though I guess.

All I can hope for Brad is that he follows the Hawthorn trend and convinces the board to cut the older players and back the kids.

He’s not an innovative bloke so there’s a chance he’ll go with the latest AFL fad.

His tactics got found out and he really didn’t have an answer for it other than getting angry.

All I’m hoping for from Brad is a list rebuild and professional standards set, because I don’t think he’ll be there when the list looks more mature, he doesn’t have the tactical skills to lead real talent.

Hodge is right imo Brads main focus is to fix the offield ie; setting the standards and getting the players to a professional level and that could take 2-3 years once that’s fixed it will start to flow on field where you see improvement and better results also said that what happened at Brisbane

Brad wasn’t just hired to to get results he was also hired to fix the club i see it bit like when Paul Roos went to Melbounre

How’s that tracking at the end of two years.

Hard to say last year was his first full pre season. He’s now entering his second full pre season.

Hopefully he has seen enough in the 2 years to start making changes

He signed on as coach in September, so not sure why you’d say his first preseason doesn’t count.

True but his first pre season would have been one about discovery about connecting with players and the club was never going to come in day one and blow the joint up. i remember when he was appointed he said he wasn’t going to come in with any pre concived ideas said there is still some good things that we did at the club

Agree with both points.

Go through the list. Issue a +2 for anyone who has significantly improved on last season. Give +1 for anyone who has slightly improved. 0 for anyone who hasn’t changed, -1 for a slight regression, and -2 for a major regression.

Don’t include players who debuted this year, or were out injured for the year.

Add it all up. If you get more than 10, I’ll be ■■■■■■■ stunned. I got 6.

IMO, only 8 or 9 player have probably improved this year, with only 2 making a significant improvement: Caldwell and Durham. I could maybe accept Martin as a third if pushed.

I think that’s also part of the reason players haven’t improved. Maybe there’s some scope to suggest that we’ve tried players in new positions, so they’ve potentially improved their flexibility - but largely, those experiments have failed. Playing Nic Cox in defense was akin to putting Hird on Ablett, or Fevola on Gehrig. A pointless exercise that will likely only have one outcome.

I don’t really know how to rate Brad Scott’s performance this year. In some respects - our percentage is higher, we have more premiership points than we had last year, and my gut feel is that we’ve improved our effort defensively. However, our ball movement going forward feels like it hasn’t improved, and I’m pretty disappointed on how long it took to get Caddy, Roberts and Bryan in the team.

I don’t really know what to think. I’m not a gloomer, nor a happy clapper - I try to be measured. The biggest disappointment result wise for me is obvious: three losses to Adelaide, Melbourne and St Kilda. We win those three wins - as we should have, and guess where we are on the ladder? 2nd - playing for top spot against Sydney this weekend. Add in last weekend vs the Gold Coast as a game we should have won - and we’re on top of the ladder heading into Round 23. It’s very much a “what could have been” type of season. It’s probably somewhat ludicrous that this team is still mathematically capable of playing finals.

I tend to agree. But. Part of me says withhold judgement. I am very interested in the way we play against Sydney and Brisbane. Show something in those games and I may well change my mind yet. I’d look pretty stupid grading the year a D, only for us to then knock over Sydney and Brisbane away, Which, given the season so far - is not exactly impossible. Unlikely, yes. But in the utter mindfuck that has been Season 2024 - nothing would surprise me.

Pity he’s so ■■■■■ at the in season coaching bit, can’t be compared to Roos
