Good on Buddy for taking the offer. You'd have to be a raving retard not too.
And I doubt whoreforn will miss him all that much as a player. They seem to play at least as well without him.
He didn't take the offer. He wanted to go to Syndey. He rang them and said would you take me.
Which is why they offered 10mil over 9 years trumping all other sensible offers? Because he 'wanted' to go there?
His manager approached Sydney all the way back in Feb this year, he was always planning on going there.
And his manager didn't speak to GWS then either? I know that Sydney are running this line 'he wanted to come to us'. GWS have been talking to Pickering for at least as long. That's a Sydney smokescreen. If he wanted to go, then they only had to match the or be near the GWS offer. An offer Hawthorn were already not going to match. This is a bold move by Sydney and good luck to them... they're going to need it.
I love the idea that the AFL might step in just because a 10 year deal could potentially screw up Sydney's list if he cuts it early. Does the AFL see its role as giving teams extra benefits then baby sitting every decision they make?
I think KUDOS to Sydney. I think the deal has been structured so that Hawthorn can in no way match it and therefore don't have to trade with Hawks, they would much rather mumford go to GWS or even Collingwood. Swans have tied up most of their gun mids on 3-5 year deals. I would be furious if the AFL intervene, all Sydney need to do is show how the can fit everyone under the salary cap if the COLA is scraped and seeing as though there is no rules how the COLA is distributed then there can be no rules how they un-distribute it (would probably mean -10% across the board and a couple of retirements/delistings) Buddy and Tippett the ideal replacements for a retiring Goodes.
I understand the COLA argument. But also, playing devils advocate, the Swans will lose Bolton, Mattner, Morton, White, Everit and Mumford this year. Those six players combined would easily free up 1.5 mil per year.
Yep.
There is no doubt they can free up the cash.
The issue with the above though is, it's okay to shed 6 players salaries to free up the cash to pay 1 player, but you still need to replace another 5 players as per the rules. Makes it hard to pay 5 players when 10% of your cap is tied to 1.
Would be fascinating to see how they actually manage their TPP each year.
With the suggestion that the COLA payment is really only enforced for players on the minimum 70k base, they must be doing some serious front/back ending of contracts across numerous players at a time.
pepsi is better than coke. "hides in cave til the fighting stops"
I hope the Franklin deal goes through. Would screw up Sydney so bad in the long run.
*Tippet and Franklin taking up about $2mil+ just by themselves
* Franklin isn't going to be doing much to promote the game up there, he hates speaking to the press, and he isn't very polished in front of the media anyway.
* Makes Hawthorn,Eddie,Matlhouse angry.
* Screws up the whole Sydney list in the long term
After what has happened this year, I couldn't care less if other clubs get upset about anything.
I do laugh about people from other clubs complaining that the competition isn't fair. Um, it's been that way for the last 15 years!!! I do give Eddie a little credit, he normally will take on the AFL, the rest of the clubs and presidents are all just yes men.
The worst part about all this is we are going to be hearing more and more from guys like Mathouse and Kennet
Who cares? Clubs have no right to sook about the farcical AFL after they had a chance to do something but just furthered the cause of EFC getting smashed up the ■■■■. You made your bed, now lie in it you gutless morons. Hope this happens more often.
Remember that time all 17 other clubs turned their back on Essendon? Nice to see Sydney is getting hit by karma. All clubs turning on them now which will almost certainly see the AFL take away the extra 9.8% allowance. If they're stupid enough to sign him on a 9 year deal then they deserve it even more.
