Calombaris and other shonky employers

You should.

When the non Unionists complain that Union members are getting discriminatory preferences in the workplace, it becomes appararent that the employer is doing no more than apply the award, as enforced by the Union. The non-Unionists are left to claim enforcement individually. But they regard union membership as discretionary expenditure.
However, there are some cases where the pay is so low - particularly in traditional female jobs - that union membership may be seen as too costly.

YOUR UNION MEMBERSHIP SHOULD BE IN THE BLAST CHILLER BY NOW! 20 MINUTES TO GO COME ONNNNNN

Your last para is true BA, and it’s easy for me to say as I’ve always been relatively well paid, so union dues weren’t a big outlay. That said though, you can claim some of those membership contributions back through tax.

There’s one answer that would solve all these problems of underpayment of wages and imposition of effectively slave labor conditions on the workforce and at the same time would give the Tories and all their seed and breed a hopefully fatal apoplexy, but even though anything that gives the Tories grief is by definition a “good thing”, a lily-livered “Labor” government wouldn’t have the guts to do it:

BRING BACK CLOSED SHOP UNIONISM.

Would love to know how painters and wharfies got together in the first place.

The Federated Ship Painters and Dockers Union (FSPDU) was an Australian trade union which existed between 1900 and 1993. It represented labourers in the shipbuilding industry, covering mostly work associated with chipping, painting, scrubbing and cleaning ships, working in every size of tanks, cleaning boilers, docking and undocking vessels, and rigging work.

That makes more sense.

As an aside, my teenage band supported The Painters and Dockers at the Herdsman Hotel Perth around 1989.

They didn’t say one word to us.

They were quite introverted individuals, which given some of the bizarre clips they made is even more bizarre.

What was the name of your band, Diggers?

I went to see The Cramps at Festival Hall in 1986/7 and The Painters & Dockers were the support act. Paul Stewart had the moshing crowd so stirred up that there was a frightening, ugly atmosphere of impending chaos and violence in the room that I have never experienced before or since. The Cramps were tame in comparison.

Apologies for taking this thread further off topic.

Not surprised given the thick smoke emanating out of their dressing room resembled a pea-soup fog you sometimes see covering an English Motorway.

If musicians could have normal conversations they wouldn’t need to be musicians.

Just look at Digs.

We were called Ritual.

We picked up a few of these support shows because the bloke who ran the rehearsal studio seemed to be well connected with touring bands and we would offer to roadie for the main act for beer or free if they moaned about the beer.

Was good fun whilst it lasted.

Slimy, fake, ingenuine, lying piece of ■■■■.

There’s no cracks through which correct rates of pay can fall.

Get to jail, ■■■■.

Rockpool Dining Group, a giant in the hospitality and dining scene, has been accused of “one of the most egregious cases of wage theft Australia has seen yet” by a law firm alleging the company has underpaid its workers at least $10 million.

Law firm Maurice Blackburn Lawyers has formally referred the company — with an annual turnover of $400 million — to the Fair Work Ombudsman after calculating they owe workers at least $10 million.

Hospo Voice, an advocate group for hospitality workers, raised their concerns about the restaurant group with the law firm after it received numerous complaints from current and former employees.

Rockpool Dining Group is fronted by celebrity chef Neil Perry and owned by Quadrant Private Equity Group, but there are no allegations against him personally.

The dining group has 80 venues across the country, employing 2500 staff at some of Australia’s top restaurants including Rockpool Bar & Grill, Spice Temple and Sake. The company also owns restaurant chains Fratelli Fresh, The Bavarian, Burger Project and Munich Brauhaus.

not surprising.

im sure theyll end up paying them out and itll all just be forgotten.

Gotta love capitalism. Corporations can steal millions of dollars from your workers, partake in ecocide, spy and share personal data and just get slaps on the wrists while the peasants get sent to jail for even the most minor infraction.

Unless they start throwing directors in jail for this ■■■■, nothing is ever going to change.

Jail is not a deterrent; take their money and assets. That is their only love.
