Cars for the people

Lubricant oil is a different matter to diesel petrol. The right oil , and frequently changed, is very important.

I had to let my L.A woman go today. It helps me unlock bigger and better things so was happy to let her go to a good home. The lady who purchased it fell in love with it. I imported the car during the height of COVID and it was a long a stressful journey but got there. It was a solid car, a real barn find. It still had the original 55 year old ball joints from factory and 91000 original miles. I turned it from a tired old lady into a supermodel. It was 18 years since I had my last car which was a Mazda RX3 . I got my love back for cars working on this mustang. Anyway it was time to move on .

Doesn’t your handbrake work? Apart from that it looks like a nice car.

It wasn’t at the time. I got under and did get it fixed. The problem as well was the linkage from the T-bar and the transmission was out of whack. It just went one day and when it was in park the car was still rolling. Lucky when I first noticed was at the servo to put petrol in got out and the car started to move. It just needed some adjustments but went straight to Repco for some wheel chocks. Can’t be too careful.

Kombi. I have been looking recently and could be on the radar for my next car. I love the older split screen ones but don’t want to fork out the cash. Done up look awesome. I love the the look of the ones that are slammed on airbags.

I bought mine in 1973 for $500, but Mrs Fox the first made me sell it when we got married in 1975. Friend here Bacchus Marsh restores old sports cars, his apprentice got a 1964 Kombi, cost him $19000, sold it for $85,000 after restoration.

If my body was a car, I’d trade it in for a new model.

Every time I cough or sneeze, my radiator leaks and my exhaust backfires.

Sounds like you need a new O ring.

The wife has an Hyundi i30 where the motor has just completely crapped out.
Total mismanagement from our end.

So I need a new one and have a couple of options.

New engine is out of the question because it’s putting a 12K engine into a 16K car.

I can put in a reconditioned motor for around 6.5K Or just sell it as it is. Busted.

Has anyone got experience with reconditioned motors and can recommend anywhere? or if I wanted to sell it in this condition what is the best way?

Take $500 from a wrecker or metal recycler. They’ll come and pick it up

Was kind of hoping for more than that.

Like put a reconditioned motor in it and then sell it.

Yeah you’ll need to weigh up how much time and stuffing around you are prepared to put into it.

I got a reco motor for my son at a place near Moorabbin airport called Enginesplus. They seemed ok, and I got a local mechanic in Bacchus Marsh to fit it.

Engine was fine, but not long after the rest of the car fell apart. It was a Mitsubishi.

My first car was an EH Holden station wagon which ended up being more rust than metal.

It became unsafe to drive, but a bloke from work happily took it off my hands for $50 (in 1979) to use as a paddock bomb. Once he got it home and had a closer look at what was left of the subframe, he was too scared to even bash it around the paddock.

Or find a Hyundai wrecker, get a used motor from a crashed car for $1000-1500 (plus maybe another $500-700 to install?)
