What’s annoying is, we can probably all remember when Kia and Hyundai were pretty average, simply low cost cars. Hard to overcome that.
Japanese cars were also thought of the same way, when they first arrived. Chinese cars will have to overcome the same bias.
I was talking the other day to a guy who drives a SAIC van for work. He bought it new about 3 years ago and loves it. Never had any problems.
Their products will continue to evolve and improve. There is one company which is making an upmarket EV car, which looks like it was made to tackle the Porsche Taycan head on. I have only seen pictures of it, but it looked the goods.
First generation or two of Korean cars to come here were genuinely ■■■■■, at least for Australian conditions. Parents had an early Daewoo which had 90% of the plastic disintegrate in its first summer. All covered under warranty, but still.
I don’t reckon I’d buy a Chinese make for another 2-3 years yet. Takes time to work out what is needed in the conditions.
The Chinese dominance of the EV scene is inevitable, they already dominate the manufacturing department but you look at some of the luxury models available in their domestic market (for a fraction of the luxury cost) and it’s only a matter of time before they dominate the international scene.
HiPhi, Nio, XPeng and Hongqi EVs look unbelievable, and with support from the Chinese government (and burgeoning middle class population base) they should be able to turn produce commercial success.
I think(not for certain) that for most car manufacturers if they wanted to do business in China it had to be a joint venture.
So they(govt companies) quickly got all the required IP to produce good vehicles.
And yes the next 50 years will the Chinas more so than the last 50.
I tend to agreee…but…if China can own a car company (MG) and then sell known brands to international markets at a premium, wouldn’t they do that?
Technically(I think) Volvo are Chinese make. Certainly Chinese owners and 4 plants in China pumping out vehicles.
It’s perhaps too broad a brush to bucket all Chinese stuff as poor quality, they have good and bad. You do still get what you pay for.
I daresay nearly every car in the world has some proportion MiC.
It’s the design & QC controls which vary between the Volvos and LDVs. In 5-10 years that gap will have narrowed significantly.
Dodgy.
There’s a car around the corner here that has RAPIT (ford Raptor). Just looks stupid
That’s some “education” ![]()
