Sorry if already discussed, but what’s with the trend in box-shaped 4x4s and SUVs? What happened to aerodynamics?

I think it’s a couple of things.

  • need to make them look like cars so people will buy them.
  • size of the battery means you need a decent sized vehicle to haul the battery.

Because aerodynamics are ugly.

Because customers understand when they advertise things like “600 litres of boot space”; but customers don’t understand “drag coefficient of 0.33”

Auto marketers also use terms like “zoom zoom” and “das auto” which is apparently a compelling reason to buy.

Just arrived back in Medan and cruising to the hotel l spotted a new MG model, a fairly sleek 4 door sedan. I looked twice to make sure l didn’t read it wrong. nope, it was a new MG all right, just not a model l had ever seen before.

Finally some style is returning to Toyota’s

As compared to this Chinese one that looks like a cross between a Cruiser and a Jeep

The Land Cruiser is not supposed to look racy. It’s a serious vehicle for outback roads and off-road work, like the Nissan Patrol. Sure a lot of people use them as city cars, but that’s not what they’re built for. Every second car in the NT is a Land Cruiser.

I think new Toyota range Landcruiser + Prado looks good.
but out of my price range.

I know there were a few complaints when discovery went from 4 to 5.

Yes I do know all this thank you, that pic is of what is supposedly the new land cruiser PRADO, and is in relation to the box shape post, as a previous LC owner, 4wdriver, caravan owner and avid camper I’m quite sure I know what an LC is used for. Cheers

Each to their own, I guess. I reckon the big boxy aggressive front ends are ugly and I think it’s got little to do with function. Fashion has always bewildered me though.

I think from an aerodynamic point of view, a boxy front is not so much of an issue (a lot of air is flowing through the radiator, rather than around the car). And most mechanics will be grateful for designs that maximise space in the engine bay.

Aerodynamically, its more a boxy rear that will be inefficient, as it leaves a turbulent wake.

Is anyone here into Holdens and if so, interested in a bunch of street commodores magazines? I have quite a few and it seems like I’d be throwing a piece of history in the bin if I was to get rid of them.
