Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024/25

Funniest part of the Harold Holt drowning is that a swimming pool was subsequently named after him

I remember it clearly. Holt was the successor to Menzie. He had been groomed for the position of PM for years. He was also the darling of the MSM at the time. He presented a glamorous image and there were plenty of pictures of him splashed over the front pages with bikini clad family members. He looked set to have his own dynasty. When he disappeared it was a huge event. All sorts of theories, no body ever recovered. He was used to swimming at the back beach, so conspiracy theories ran wild.

Thanks CJ, it’s a fascinating moment in our history. I’ll have to look up to see if anyone’s done any documentaries on it .

Still remember it as young as I was.

As a large family we used to holiday down at Rye and Blairgowrie over the summer
and once or twice over those fortnights we’d go to Portsea back beach. It’s a rough old section of beach. A number of times I had to be dragged out half drowned. The undertows were v strong.

Holt might’ve been a strong swimmer and diver but most familiar with that beach thought it no real surprise he possibly succumbed to the surf there. On a bad day it was lethal.

That sounds like something a CIA plant would say

I always thought he was regarded as a bit of a lightweight, and became PM when Menzies retired because there was no real standout.

I remember when it happened. The TV stations were on it non-stop.

Funniest thing was the late abc newsreader Geoff Raymond then a young reporter speaking to the camera on the beach at the end of the day
.”the search has come to a dead halt”

The one I liked the best was that Zara and the Bodyguard were in a wild affair, so they hatched the plan to drown him on Cheviot beach, but the body got caught in a rip and was washed out to sea.

Back then Cheviot Beach was a restricted area and was still used for Navy target practice. We used to train down at Portsea at Percy Cerutty’s camp and there was a run we did from London Bridge Lookout along the coast and around Point Nepean to Portsea Pier, it was about 6 km. You had to time it so the gunnery practice was not happening, but it added to the fun.

As I recall the water was treacherous there and even strong swimmers were in danger.

Rey Mysterio Jr’s uncle.
Not Rey Mysterio Jr.

For those into baseball - Rickey Henderson passed of pneumonia, just four days before turning 66 years old.

Indisputably the greatest leadoff hitter in the game’s history. His record of 1,406 stolen bases may be one of the single most unbreakable sports records that exists. Over 3,000 hits and nearly 300 home runs. 81 of those homers came in the first at bat of a game, which is also a record.

Famous for his ego, in which he often spoke of himself in the third person, although as he aged, he became self-aware of it and started playing it up for laughs. Also famous for absolutely refusing to retire until he clearly couldn’t perform anymore, well into his 40s.

With the Athletics leaving Oakland it kind of seems fitting.

Gee, that’s young. As a Blue Jays fan spending most of '92 in Canada, Rickey was definitely the ‘man in the black hat’. The following year, he crossed to the Jays and was a member of their World Series winning team. To put it in footy terms, it would’ve been like Brereton crossing to Essendon and playing in the '93 flag.

Yeah I don’t think I realized how nomadic his career was in the end. I had no idea he had four stints in Oakland; I just assumed he was there twice. I don’t remember the Red Sox or Dodgers period at all, however brief they were.

For a long time I thought of him as a Yankee as that coincided with the beginning of my baseball fandom, but he’s probably going to be more remembered as an Oakland A, and that feels more correct.

He basically said that he went wherever they would play and pay him. Famously, after he recieved his first million-dollar pay check, the front office rang him a few months later as they were concerned it hadn’t been cashed and thought maybe something was wrong. Turns out Ricky had framed it and hung it on his wall!

An absolute legend and one of my all time favourite players. Every time he made it on base, everyone knew he was going to steal and yet, they couldn’t stop him. The Dollop podcast did a very funny episode on his life.

This got reported to me tonight on the México/Belize border as Paul Hogan. Main difference is Burt never got the wrinkles iron-ed out!

I saw Burt in Darwin in January, when I attended our game versus the NTFLW.

Olivia Hussey passed away aged 73.
Came to everyone’s notice as a 15 year old alongside 18 year old Leonard Whiting in the title roles of Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet in 1968.

When Olivia appeared in Romeo & Juliet overnight she became the fantasy girlfriend of millions of school boys all around the world. She was such a natural looking beauty. She should have enjoyed a longer career and gone too soon.
