Still remember a Geelong-resident workmate passing on a rumour of Turner’s car-window-related shenanigans over 1980-81 new year. It seemed to be accepted as true.
Underrated post.
Turner and Flower were The wingers of my childhood.
Hawkins, Neagle.
Not trying to age you too much, but you must have some early memories of Keith Greig ?
I do.
Old enough to know, not old enough to appreciate.
Dougie and Dipper a little later, but early eighties it’s Mick and Robbie.
Obviously anyone Essendon played on the wing was better.
Ian Marsh
Brian Wood
Ricky Barham
Alan Stoneham
Schimma
Bourke
Eade
we were spoilt for choice
Did they all die ?
i remember that !
keith Greig was a very smooth mover and had a booming kick.Mickey Turner was really quick and seemed to get out on his own a bit , a really good player but Greig, Flower and Alves were better wingers
nice pick up
Robbie Flower was gone by 1980 wasn’t he? I remember him matched one day against Geoff Blethyn on the wing, which must have been very early seventies. Flower was the star winger of the league at the time, but Blethyn gave him a bath. I can’t remember whether we won the game, but it was when we were at a very low ebb. Blethyn was far and away our best player and we didn’t have many who were any good.
Google tells me 73-87 and AA ‘80 and ‘83.
Okay. Funny how the memory plays tricks. Flower was a great player. He was only light, but somehow managed to be very powerful at the same time. And superbly skilful.
I remember when Heard and Marsh were on the wings. Heard would run around in cicles while Marsh would run backwards.
Bourke and Clay were handy. Outliers in their height for those days.
Russel Blew & Barry Capuano.
Jeez, I forgot Ken “Racehorse” Fletcher!
We really did have it good
For those of a certain age and familiar with Radio Caroline and the early days of BBC Radio 2 … Johnnie Walker has passed away this NYE (UK). Sad news … he was a legend and his show still lives on, being broadcast now in tribute.
BBC News - Johnnie Walker: Radio’s rock ‘n’ roll pirate
And for the hell of it … a fav from his tunes he ensured were blasted out. RIP Jonnie.
I think I have one of his vinyls, stored with others somewhere in the garage.
