According to news.com.au, Hackman, his wife and pet dog all died but apparently not foul play so a bit strange.

That sounds like Carbon Monoxide 
I couldn’t work out if he died next to them or if they all died. Seems like all are dead.
Loved Hackman. Crimson Tide is one of my favourites. Played an underrated role in Heartbreakers, has some really funny lines in that movie.
