Celebrity (and not so) Deaths 2024/25

Both were from Stawell.

Showing my early ability to pick a good footballer, I had Gary Grainger’s number on one of my first Essendon jumpers.

I fondly remember the day the boys from Nhill kept Lockett to nil.

A mate of mine married Bob Dunlop’s daughter. He was one of the very few double-left-handers at our club, died two or three years back. Top bloke except for being a Hawk fan and urinating on my car during the 1984 grand final…not the only one, mind you.

Glen was from Lillimur, wasn’t he?

According to the EFC Past Players page, Glenn Hawker was recruited from Kaniva in 1978.

I’d never heard of Lillimur until I saw your post so I looked it up…it’s just over 10kms South West of Kaniva.

So then I did “Glen Hawker Lillimur” and found this surprise reference:

Maybe Lillimur was too small to have a senior team, but did have junior teams. Or was just too small to have a team and the town’s inhabitants played for Kaniva.

Race Mathews, who helped shaped the good Labor policies at Fed and State level. He came from a teaching background, compared to the current drafting of MPs from staffers

12 months ago today we lost Corey Williams. He was a close friend of mine and I’m proud I introduced him to AFL and forced him to choose Essendon!! He didn’t want to just jump onto the top team so Essendon was his choice. He loved the Bombers.

He loved ‘Dread’ (Hepp - long haired!) and ‘Brother Dread’ (Tippa).

Race was a very good man, and he was kind and generous with his time for us younger budding socialists.

I played a game against Nhill in the long forgotten period of human history when I was a promising junior.

Kicked four goals from the ruck and got reported for striking. In fairness, the bloke required striking.

Must have been amusing at the tribunal when the bloke whose name I was playing under turned up in a clearly weeks old leg cast to be suspended for four weeks…

Did a lot for modern Australian basketball, some of which was completely under the radar.

Was also my son’s favourite personality, he loved seeing him at games.

Big respect, big man. Big loss.
