He seemed old in the 70’s!

But he could write a pop song with a hook

Also just before the new red dwarf book comes out ‘titan’. Set before the accident that wipes out the crew.

Sure could. He had a whole string of very big hits. He could play the piano pretty well too.

The old Sullivans shop is just 4 doors down from our house.
The house got demolished years ago.

Dan Simmons, sci-fi author, age 78.

Giant of the field with enormous talent and imagination and a vast but undeniably mixed legacy. The Hyperion Cantos is deservedly a regular entry in top 10 best sci-fi ever lists, and deservedly established his reputation. The Terror, which later was adapted for TV, was also another one of his, and is one of my favourites.

Unfortunately his brain broke a bit in the wake of 9/11, he bought big into culture war stuff and it started to show a bit in his work (The Abominable is truly one of the most wretched things I’ve read, and that was gutting for me because it hit so many of my interests and I was really looking forward to it once I heard about the concept). Spotting the inevitable evil gay guy (sometimes a pedophile) in his books was a bingo game in the last 20 years. Not always evil because he was gay, but the gay guy was always evil in SOME manner.

Leaves behind a weird, complex, often-confused body of work that includes some of the best genre writing ever.

Such a beautiful girl

damn is that gerard whatley’s account?

Wrong love of his life.

Black Caviar.

I eagerly await the cookers response to this “sudden death”.

I am actually sad about losing Australia’s mum, even though she had a long and seemingly happy life.

And I don’t know how many times I’ve watched Makybe Diva’s third Cup, but it’s a lot. And more than any other race.

And John Sullivan (Andrew McFarlane) has a main role in Spartacus: House of Ashur with a hot daughter. He’s an old man (i.e. older than me)

My fondest memory is of her doubling my money in the Cox plate after I won abot $800 on “Son of Spartacus” at 90/1 in one of the lead up races.

I can’t remember the year, I was too drunk.
