His name wouldn’t be familiar to most but Chip Taylor, who has clocked off aged 86, was a songwriter whose work included such classics as Wild Thing and Angel Of The Morning.

Chip was born James Voight, younger brother of Jon and later uncle of Angelina Jolie. His father Elmer was a professional golfer who helped overturn the PGA’s “whites only” policy in the '50s.

Dash Crofts (87) of Seals and Crofts fame no longer enjoying the summer breeze.

His real name was Darrell and he earned his nickname when his mother entered him and his twin sister Dorothy into a baby beauty contest. Somebody suggested it would be funny to call them “Dot and Dash”.

They released some seriously beautiful songs on their time. Summer Breeze, Hummingbird, We May Never Pass This Way (Again), Diamond Girl and Castles in the Sand immediately spring to mind.

R&B drummer James Gadson, age 86.

Very influential in the soul and funk world; his trademark one-handed 16th note groove is particularly notable.

He’s on Bill Withers’ “Use Me” and “Lean On Me” and hits by Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and the Jackson 5, among others.
