I was going to pretty much say what @Houli_Dooley said
He was in good form for a month. Even when he came on in the AFL pre season game he showed decent signs
It was stupid we went with jones round one off the back of terrible pre season games and a interrupted pre season. Voss had been great in those pre season games, yet we decided to go with jones for whatever reason and no suprise to anyone, he sucked - just like he has in pretty much every game he’s played in 2 years
Which makes most people think there’s reasons or things he’s doing that holds him back. Which most people would think fits in with him struggling to even get a kick in the VFL.
There was a week where Jones and WEideman didnt play, and we chose not to play VOSS who was in great VFL form.
Then he was moved from FF to CHF so that he couldn’t say look at all the goals im kicking.
Mind you Jorgensen VFL listed player kicked 5 one week too, if VOSS was playing FF could have been him.
With VOSS, you dont know what you don’t know.
All well and good to say he wont get a touch at AFL level.
But in a development year, was worth a try when he had his confidence up. Even deserved a crack late last year. I guess coaches don’t value 4 goal games from forwards at VFL level.
There is something to be said about delivery to forwardline.
Jones has Merrett and Martin and Walla at AFL Level.
Voss was getting Hobbs and Narkle, now Bernacki and Rasinac
VOss doesnt just get goals as a lead up forward, he impacts the game at ground level and lays bone crunching tackles. Looks to be told to bring ball to ground in marking contests too when up the ground. Also can run forward and back with flight / beat man back and get goals that way, plus in general play. Not just a one trick pony.
Perhaps the coaches just haven’t got it right? Perhaps they got it wrong?
They seemingly allow jones to do 5 fifths of fark all weekly until the point of dropping, yet want voss to work on whatever it is they deem not good enough in his game. Perhaps instead of focusing on what he cant do, they shoulf focus on what he can do. I mean, i wouldn’t expect anyone to be a complete player at his age anyway. Theres always going to be things ti work on
I dont deny his form has dropped off, but that also coincides with player availability and our injury list blowing out again, and the VFL returning to being non competitive. He’s probably not close to a game now with langford hopefully cementing his spot as a forward but it doesn’t mean he was stiff not to get a go early.
But the whole focus of the club the last 6-7 months has been a conscious switch from the development focus under Rutten to more structured, more consistent on the gameplan, and more about actual performance.
Much has been made of trying (where possible) to settle guys into roles, and Scott’s also made a point of saying he wants guys to be ready to stay in.
Right or wrong, that’s been a consistent message and it seems to have been fairly consistently applied.
So, again, it comes back to the overall direction of the club.
Which is…???
The great @Paul_Cousins VFL Wrap from the Sash podcast
Played a experienced VFL outfit - Brissie no injuries at AFL level.
Lions midfield had AFL midfield Lyons, Cockatoo, Ah Chee, Mathieson and Robertson (is a jet can’t believe can’t get a game for them) Against a VFL midfield.
Munkara - first half forward, second half defence, some nice moments at half back. Generally easier to find footy in defence. Found some confidence, 10-11 touches as opposed to single figures as a forward. Unbelievable tricks skill wise, good at selling Candy and sidestep/goose step. Needs to find the ball more to show skills. Huge step up for him.
Narkle - Been terrific, came into program late. Not the most extrovert leader, quiet type, friendly, blended in nicely. Clearly one of best yesterday and several times, will be on the radar for AFL sides (mid season draft) after inside/outside mid that can kick goals.
Snelling - 28 touches midfield and forward, bit quiet first half, second half strong, made more impact, Huge fan of Snell, kind of player every team needs willing to sacrifice game for greater good, attitude first class, great guy and serious worker. Him and Narkle against AFL midfield cracked in.
VFL playing 2:30 MCG get there early. AFL 7:00pm start
Have to put work into Richmond’s running backs - Broad, Rioli and Short.
Blunt them and you go a long way to beating the Tiges. Don’t, and you get cut up.
Caldwell can’t play on all of them.
Going early here but it will be close to impossible for Essendon to win on Sat.
As we do with against every experienced side we play against, we’ll get beaten by what we know the opposition do best and at the same time, play all their experienced players back into form.
We don’t have the mental fortitude to firstly execute game plans for 4 quarters but more importantly, arrest momentum in within quarters.
Every game we’ve lost this season has had a game killing quarter where we’ve been incapable of stemming the carnage until the break when Scott can reset the team.
Essentially, they can’t do it on the field themselves.
This is mostly down to our historical weak leadership at the club (6 horrific years of Heppell as captain) which has indoctrinated the players to completely capitulate in big games and big moments. Every. Single. Time.
Combine this with horrific player availability and you have the Essendon we see today.
This won’t be fixed until winners from other clubs are brought into the club to change the culture into a ruthless one. Until then we are fu*ked and won’t win many big games.
