Climate Change in Australia (Part 2)

This is why I was apprehensive when they won a majority in their own right rather than having to govern in minority with independent/green support to keep them honest.

Gas exports is an awkward one. Gas peaking plants will be the main backup globally to stabilise renewable energy grids. LNG will be what allows the majority of the world to move away from coal and onto renewables.

If we don’t export gas, it prevents those countries from making the transition.

Russian invasion of Ukraine has served to push up gas prices as Europeans seek to reduce reliance on Russian energy.
Also a knock on effect from higher oil prices ( partly from manipulation of oil prices);

They’re going a pretty good job of setting themselves up to lose a swag of seats at the next election, they’re performing poorly across many of their portfolios.

In gas though, I’m confused. This announcement seems to clear the way for gas moving forward. Yet I thought in Victoria they were going to cease gas as a source of fuel in houses, requiring electricity replacement in the future.

How does the new Federal policy line up with what’s happening in Victoria for homeowners?

Vic has banned gas connections for new residential dwellings, not across the board

Ah ok, thanks :+1:

Some psephs are casting it as a vote winner for the ALP

Not sure who the ALP will be winning votes from, by this. They ain’t winning back teal or green voters by going all in on gas, they ain’t winning rural seats by expanding fracking, and any lib voters they were realistically aiming to peel off voted for them last time round.

When it’s presented as a pathway to transition from reliance on coal, towards renewable energy.

Never a better time to commit to a decades long gas project.

Really struggling to understand the rationale here from Labor, are they this stupid or are they that beholden to fossil fuel industry?

Action on the climate was one of the main reasons they finally got elected.

Their actions now in government make me think they are pretty keen to get back into opposition, i can’t think of a single swing voter i know who voted for them that’s happy with how bad they have been in this area.

Whilst I agree with some of that I must say the opposition are far worse and no chance of returning to power anytime soon.
Labor pretty much have a free ride for now

Didn’t your Dad ever tell you about arguing with idiots ?

Rudd government win was partly influenced by the LNP government policies on refugees. Then Rudd did an about turn.
Climate change was not the prime reason for the change in government. I wouldn’t put it that high on the list.

I just watched Skyscraper for the first time. Now all this talk about fires and CO2, leads me to this question.

In Skyscraper there is a huge building burning fiercely on many floors. The Rocks Wife resets that automatic fire fighting system and the fires are extinguished by gas, probably CO2, maybe nitrogen. The fire is starved of oxygen and extinguished, how the Fark does The Rock, his kid and another bloke survive without O2 !

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s Hollywood.

Doubtful

Fark me Benny, Albo has been in office just on two years and they have done a shitload of improvement. They started a long way back, and Tanya does not get it all her own way, but they are moving in the correct direction. Give them a bit more time, given the obstacles they have to deal with.

Is that the same coal loving moron Tanya?
