As much as I loved belting out our club song when I was a kid, I think it’s high time for a reboot of our anthem. Let’s face it, the melody is tough to sing with the emphatic gusto that every win deserves. “Up Up!”
After all the challenges we’ve faced in the last 20 years, I think its time to shift from a “team song” to a “club anthem.” We need something that goes beyond just the players (“our boys who play this grand old game”) – an anthem that unites us all, as we continue to climb out of the depths of darkness. It’s time to celebrate everything that is Red & Black!
I’m not a songwriter, and I can’t write music, but I’ve taken a stab at rewriting the lyrics. I hope you can find the beat and feel the boisterous gusto within. Imagine it as a belt out loud anthem after weve just beat the bloos for our 17th flag:
Weeeee. Areeeee. The Red & Black!
Tooogeeether, we have each other’s back.
For the club we play, the pride of us all,
The Bombers we are. United, Strong and Tall.
When the siren sounds, and the game’s been won,
Our hearts beat strong, having got the job done.
Through the roar of the crowd, we proudly hear,
The echo of our anthem, loud and clear.
WE. ARE. THE RED & BLACK!
Thats my offering anyway, interested to know what everyone else might think, or an come up with or maybe we stick to the heritage and history that the “other teams they dont fear”.
No thanks. Vast majority of fans won’t want change. Look at the reaction last year when they dared to change the ‘Bombers’. The club song is the clubs dna.
Bombers all let us rejoice
For we are old and compliant
We’ve spongy floors and apparel for sale
Our home is girt by planes
Our mid season draftees abound in nature’s gifts
Of trophy cabinet, rich and dusty
In history’s page let every stage
Advance Essendon’s fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Essendon’s fair
Beneath our radiant Marvel Roof
We’ll toil with feet and hands
To make this Club of ours
Renowned of all the teams
For those who’ve across the states
We’ve boundless business opportunities to share
With courage let us all combine
To advance Essendon’s fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Essendon’s fair
See the Bombers fly up, up!
To win the premiership flag.
Our boys who play this grand old game,
Are always striving for glory and fame!
See the bombers fly up, up,
The other teams they don’t fear,
They all try their best,
But they can’t get near,
As the bombers fly up!
Our song is one of the great aspects of the club for me. Some will disagree, but it’s up there with the best in the competition. No change for mine. Keep it (and the logo) as is!
