Yep, I did that too
They missed out on an epic idea of fixing the Hall of Fame.
It would be nice if the club, on the eve of the season beginning, could put out a few articles on how our key young players are tracking and what the plan is to get them back playing again.
I speak of Zach Reid in particular and I know Nik Cox is apparently almost back in full training but him as well.
Help us feel connected to the players and the club by lifting the veil and doing a story on what their journey has been over the pre-season and what their focus is for the next month, the next 6 months etc.
These are blue chip investments into their third season and yeah they’ve had injuries but it’s feels like we barely know them or hear about them.
We don’t hear much from anybody at the club. We haven’t been properly introduced to our new CEO and our coach is an enigma. He’s hidden and not talking to us. I don’t know where this clubs going with its engagement strategy. It’s become introverted and formed a bubble to the outside world. It’s not good enough. And I don’t accept the argument they want their football to do talking.
This week we’ve had the Hawks CEO on several radio stations talking to its fans and updating them about what’s going on. Setting expectations, discussing home ground future, selling their clubs journey. Reeves has been out there pushing his clubs position about getting more reserved seats at the MCG from Collingwood. You know, standing up for themselves and by extension, it’s members. Benny Gale ditto last week. Where’s our CEO in the debate? Or President… What’s Essendon position? What’s its position on anything? Essendon has become even more irrelevant in the industry. It has no voice.
After last weeks loss, pre-season granted, no Brad Scott feedback. All we got was Gia the day after. The Ross Lyon stuff from training during last weekends match coverage was great! Where’s Essendon’s presence in this type of thing…
Last year they stopped post game coach tweets, we had to go to AFL.com for the full presser. Where was Essendon’s socials team? We now rely on fan podcasts for Essendon content. Thats says something. God love Scooter et all btw!
Anyhow, our engagement was once the envy of the comp. And that was coinciding with good and bad eras on field. We’ve possibly become the most introverted and least connected across all platforms in the league.
Our new CEO deserves time. However that formal letter was in my view a ‘roll the arm over’ effort to introduce himself. He needs to improve on that. He was a football manager, footy managers keep everyone outside the four walls out. I hope his previous roles don’t coincide with a lack of passion to want this club to open itself and proactively engage and talk to its fanbase. It starts with leadership.
On what we’ve seen to date, early signs don’t point to improvement yet in its third pillar from the external review, its members.
LOL. Glad I wasn’t the only one to do that!
OMG!
Here is what the club has done in the last month
Most of that stuff is repeated or referenced on social media. There is also lots of articles on the website including, match reports and 4 injury updates.
so no seats then?
Who’s counting?
Yeah but where’s the live stream of the players sleeping
Yeah.
But that’s all talk and no action.
I want results goddammit!
Free to connect for 6.5 hours this Saturday at The Hangar.
Was going to ask about this. Thanks, I’ll head down.
I think the VFL and VFLW games have swapped times. Im sure the club will confirm by Friday (you’d hope)
Since yesterday’s articles from the AFL?
(If this is a con to get Radio 3DJR to cover the VFL game as well, I was already asking for those training nerds to nick off early so I get a space on arrival.)
Would you like me to bring you a chair?
Erect it on Bullant Hill, please.
But what have the Romans done for us lately!??
Appreciate the detailed reply, though I don’t agree our footprint and media reach (socials et all) are at the same level as years past, and not to the level other clubs are delivering their fans.
Today alone I’ve heard the Demons President on 3AW breakfast, ‘Track’ is apparently about to join Neil Mitchell as part of a ‘Demon Day’. It’s also Demons all over SEN today. This week there’s been wall to wall content on radio alone for the Hawks, Cats, Bulldogs & Demons. Apparently Carlton are part of a media push on SEN tomorrow. Where’s Essendon in the market this week? Gia on RSN yesterday (for those that didn’t know) and I think that’s about it, I may have missed something.
I stand by my view. Essendon were unquestionably the leaders in the industry in delivery of social media and digital content until recent years. So well respected our Digital leads have been poached by other AFL and sporting clubs to amp up their presence. Essendon hasn’t kept pace and it has not been able to maintain its previous strength in this area. Other clubs like the Kangaroos are really focussing on this area and providing great content and access to their fans.
An example. Our Instagram presence and output is not at the level of other clubs.

Its Twitter content used to be strong but has dissipated the last 2-3 years too. We don’t get coaches post game tweets which I think was a great instantaneous feedback after a game. Other clubs are now more creative, innovative and provide more frequent content.
Anyhow, we agree to disagree. I think we’re just doing an adequate job in communicating with our fans. Importantly, other clubs are doing a better job and that’s my most frustrating point. Given ‘members’ is a pillar of the external review, and the Club have been open about the need for it to lift its game ‘connecting’ with fans, I stand by my argument we have a significant bridge to close.
Training today? Anyone know
members’ is a pillar of the external review
It’s on us apparently. On us to sign up, to keep membership strong.
They talk in terms of “you” as in you and me -the plonkers with the $, the bums on the seats. But the problem is the past has been “them”, and if “they” keep on thinking that way after the support “we” have given them after the last 20 years, in particular 2013 onwards, for absolutely nothing in return, there is no future.
Not a good one anyway.
It just tells me the club has forgotten who got them through that period and they just expect us to become compliant zombies again and don the sash en masse just because.
They owe us.
