COVID-19 Round 16 - A Percentage of Lies

edit: 33 forgot about New Delhi

28 (OK, a few of them are stopovers: e.g. the extent of my Auckland experience is walking down the road to the mini-golf course between flights)

Athens and Cairo planned for late next year.

Only the last of those for me.

As an example, the UK has a list of forty three places which are ā€˜green light countries’ ( which means no quarantine ) but in this list are 17 countries which may change to amber, so life is fraught with dangers - And this does not take into account if the country you visit is considered a high risk country by your place of departure - Hopefully by the end of the year there will be more certainty

I think we’re still a few months away from having to worry about these things. Hahaha.

Employers trying to manage annual leave next year are going to have a good time.

You’re not meant to accrue more than 8 weeks annual leave at my work. Lots of people bumping up to that after two years.

(Not me, I drained it to zero on the West Africa trip very early last year. But then I hit the long service leave jackpot…)

Ours is 4 weeks but I think heaps would have more than that atm. Not me either but I have LSL to tap into.

If they let me I’d love to take 4 months off at half pay next year. Doubt it though, as they’d have to backfill and therein lies where most problems will happen I think.

Yeah, I’m getting close to 8 weeks now (plus a few extra days time in lieu etc) and I’ve only been in the current job for 3 years. We have a 40 day limit too, but working for a consultancy it’s normally pretty hard to take because you have to schedule a time that suits both your employer and the client you’re seconded to. Sometimes you can manage it between assignments, but that’s not always very convenient and you don’t always get much notice.

I was intending to take 5-6 weeks overseas mid 2020, but that fell through obviously. Hoping I’ll be able to reschedule that for next year, but i suspect overseas travel is going to be horrifyingly expensive for a few years because demand will be through the roof and every airline, hotel, tourist business, etc etc etc on the planet will want to cash in. Really ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  me. Other than literal unemployment, I haven’t had a holiday longer than 10 days since 2007. I’ve had to cancel multiple planned trips due to unexpected redundancies or other minor personal disasters, and it was really getting me down LAST year, let alone now.

28 for me. Will be stuck on that for a few years as I expect the first few trips os will be to visit relatives rather than new locations.

It’s really hard with some jobs to take leave when it suits you even a little bit. I highly recommend even a few weeks off at home over the summer. I’ve done it a few times and it’s awesome.

I just looked at Qatar flights for 1st June - 31st August next year. Economy $2k return. That’s pretty good. This is for Adelaide to Athens.

In the past when I’ve taken lots of leave i’ve usually tried to book it many months in advance. It’s harder for them to actually specifically name the reason they’ll need you in the office then.

Melb to Seattle is around $2k return for next July/Aug too, if you’re willing to fly Fiji air and stop over in Nadi. Any other carrier and it gets more pricey fast. But hell, I’ve been locked in my house for a year and a half, it’s not like I don’t have a bit of spare spending money…

I was going to say… you should be one of those rich people barnz and simmo hate by now

Spoil yourself with a good holiday as soon as you can.

hate to say it H_M but…

Or fly ADL-SIN on economy for about $700 return and you can quite often get business class fares from SIN to EU for $1700. Etihad especially always run cheap business fares from Singapore

Yeah I don’t think price gouging is going to be as bad as people think, during high season maybe, but its more going to be a steady trickle of people/families willing to go through all the rigamarole of travelling abroad and having to quarantine on return rather than a flood. Arrivals will dwarf that of departures next year, airlines may just be happy to have people flying again and may fear pricing people out of the market. All friends in UK who are travelling again have said that its just as cheap as it was previously, but they have much more competition amongst airlines.

Central Africa is some hard, hard road, and the tourist infrastructure was non-existent when I was there in the late 00s so I can only imagine some of the obstacles 30 years previous. I enjoyed the challenge of it at the time, as I wanted to get as far away from what I knew as comfort as possible, but there were times when I thought ā€˜Really, mate, what do you think you are doing here?’

Reckon I must be the person that has travelled to the least number of cities on that list.
Grand total of 1. Travel has never appealed to me.

With over 1700 active cases, how are you guys determining eligibility for those that want to go in?

I asked my Dad when I was teenager, why hadn’t he ever been overseas, and he replied ā€œwhy would I want to, Australia is the best ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  country in the world.ā€ Guess I wanted to find out for myself. He died never having left the state he was born in. I never wanted to be that person.
