COVID-19 Round 18 - Dan Dictates you must get back to doing the things you love

I was thinking about this over the past few days and it kind of feels like there was always an air of inevitability about the fate of the most vulnerable members of the community.
COVID zero quickly became a fairy tail. Omicron, which nullifies a lot of current generation vaccines effectiveness against transmission, became a thing. Nowhere in the world was going to (or could) endure the 3-4 years of lock down required to ride out a pandemic.
Even with the benefit of hindsight I still think closing the borders and pandemic measures were 100% the right thing to do until we had vaccines, but even still it feels like it was always a matter of when, not if, the most vulnerable would be hit hard.

Two weeks may be optimistic, but I’m sure there will be plenty available by the time demand drops.

Telling people to calm down during a crisis is like trying to herd cats.

The test result line will not answer. What I did was ring the other main hotline, select the option that asks if you require some support because they will answer. Just say that you know you haven’t called the right number, but you have been awaiting your results for five days. The lady I spoke to was fantastic, and despite having to wait for two hours, they eventually put me through to someone at the results department, and they texted me immediately.

Opening the doors and being really happy with 80% vaxxed while allowing the 20% unwashed to roam and mingle with us to enjoy the Christmas freedumb.

They are.

Wasn’t there also some information about vaccination percentages being based on 2019 population data, and that skewing results a bit in places?

Restrictions? What restrictions?

At the moment, we need to wear masks indoors, and if we attend an outdoor event with over 30,000 people.

But we should take personal responsibility, if we feel like it.

I’m pretty sure it’s clear at this point that this thing is being transmitted by everyone, vaxxed or not. And that the ā€˜case numbers’ bomber001 asked about include a wide spectrum - on a public level we’re seeing doubled jabbed sportsmen and women, triple jabbed commentators (Mel McLaughlin), and I’m sure plenty of unvaxxed too.

only 2 in hospital, but i know there are a few close contacts in hospital as well awaiting results.

on morning bike ride someone’s daughter was close contact and isolating.
she only moved out new year’s day and flat mates job at coffee shop became an exposure site and she’s awaiting test results.

Heard there were a couple of supermarket employees in devonport who contracted covid, during 8 hour shift, but only other employees would be considered close contacts given rules.

And a mate said a friend of his came back from melbourne at the cricket and brought some covid back with him and is off work.

Also in Victoria, restrictions on entry for the unvaxed, but as the vaxed can be infected and transmit with the new variant, it does not have the same impact as Delta and renders contact tracing unworkable.
Now, apart from households or care residences with an infection, iso becomes an honor system.
Sutton noted that recommendations on average secure 50 percent compliance compared to mandatory health orders.

Understated number of cases don’t matter with our strategy, because it’s only a matter of when you’ll be infected not if.
Just like the flu, if you’re okay and work, go ahead and work. Otherwise stay home and monitor symptoms.

Not saying it’s the right approach, but it is what it is.

Daughter of ex GF in Brisbane has COVID. She is 19 YO & double vaxxed. Omicron is likely at 70% of cases.

She has ā€˜fever, chills, sore chest, back pain, eyeball pain. It’s certainly not mild’.

Hmmm.

I’m at the local park with a bottle of hand sanitiser watching my little girl having a blast in the sunshine, get outside people and enjoy the sun.

Today, 11 active cases listed from Sunshine ED.
New locations of 10 or more:
Barwon Heads Hotel 23 cases
Wilson’s Nightclub Horsham 13 cases

MCG cases now up to 33.

Ok, good to know.
Singapore has some Omicron community cases now but not widespread. Looks like it’s the continued restrictions here that are keeping it down (i.e. mask wearing, gathering size limits, etc). But Chinese New Year is coming in a few weeks so there could well be a spike coming from that.

Under 18’s don’t need to show vaccine status to enter anywhere, so we’re probably down to under 4% of the population in Victoria who can only access essential retail (18+ and unvaccinated). Maybe less, as some of those have packed up and moved interstate.

50% compliance on recommendations is more than I’d have thought.
