David Barham - Our new Board Overlord

I know quite a few of us question the review findings there was a specific mention in regards to the high performance department and the fitness of the players.
Is there any reason there hasn’t been significant changes in the fitness department and why we tend to hire from other clubs seconds rather then get the directors such as Burgess or Russell who have already ran successful departments.
Also what has been implemented to ensure we don’t have another end of season fade out as we typically do.

It wouldn’t be board election time by any chance would it?

Which is why I opted for my Facebook page. People can directly connect with me there and hopefully we can have some good chats. Or often I meet people at games - at my seat, in the lift even. I work full time, have a family and volunteer at the Bombers. I sit on committees (including Hall of Fame, work with Past Players), attend as many games as i can (ALL games that is both mens and women’s), plus functions. I’d love to be here responding in real time… I care, I listen to members. I hope you have seen that - the external review was a big part of it. I voted for that. Let’s get everyone in to have a say - members, players, admin, past players. Build our future around that. I ask you help us see the plan through.

Hi Melissa

Thank you for your response. I understand you engage supporters through various means, which is more than can be said for other board members.

You’ve identified what you think are measures of confidence for supporters. I won’t speak on behalf of others, but nothing you have said instils any confidence that this business- lets be frank here, this is no longer a club - has turned a corner. Or even understands the depth of despair as a supporter I feel.

Do you know the level of embarrassment i have identifying as an Essendon supporter? We don’t get ridicule, it’s pity. The best part of the season is the preseason because I don’t have to have that sick anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach each week wondering which Essendon is going to turn up.

Good luck with the accountability because the football department was not held to account for poor team selection that lacked any reasonable measure of integrity.

I hope I’m wrong, and the club can get it’s act together. If i were voting, it would be no confidence in the board.

But kudos for having the guts to come on here.

Currently? Or did you mean “historically”?

Spot on there used be a sense of envy from opposition fans and over the past twenty years it’s transformed from that to a laughing stock to sheer pity.
The worse part is the board fail to recognise that on field results will bring greater commercial viability yet fail to implement recommendations from the reviews we still get lumped with a sub par fitness departments and below average development coaches.
I will give them one thing they have installed a half a new recruitment department but it will be years before we even know if that was a good bad result

Melissa, thanks for your insights but you forgot to add “time will tell”.

Unless it’s me, then it won’t even start well.

How it got this bad is an indictment on all involved at board and management levels. We might as well be a new club starting out given the change required.

But, she at least came on here. Hopefully she can take out of this the absolute despair many of us feel and implore unity at all levels to lift this club out of the bottom of the bin.

We had fewer injuries than most clubs this season. Sent three players overseas recently to work with specialists on ongoing soft tissue concerns. Replaced MCG oval turf.

Stopped off season lack of professionalism
from players which will show in its results i think in coming years. Traded out one who simply didn’t come to the party on that message.

I would argue some external review recommendations have been put into action but it’s not a 24 month quick fix.

I still get frustrated with Scott on team selection yes but overall i can clearly see areas we are turning things around on that hopefully start to show on field. Recruiting change waa much needed… yes late but glad it was done.

Iam not as concerned with injuries a lot of them are bad luck what concerns me is the fact that injuries seem to be reoccurring injuries to key players then throw on top mid season fade outs year after year.

How can anyone have faith in this board of directors when they cant even exit a failed list boss without incurring a fair work action?

How none of you stood down after the thorburn embarrassment says it all really.

All Boards have a prime responsibility of good governance, which is the process of overseeing the control and direction of the organization. No disrespect but for the last 20 years, good governance has not been a feature of any EFC Board.

Why should I vote for you ? Sell me the idea !

Tell us the good governance of appointing the man running your internal review as ceo?

Like many others on this forum, I am frustrated at the performance of the club’s AFL team over the past 20 years. I think that our pain is worse this off-season because of the AFL team’s poor end to the 2024 season, when we had a healthy list, good ladder position and easy draw, but still fell in a heap!

However I am happy to know that a board member has visited the forum to get a sense of this frustration. So credit to you, Melissa, for doing this.

I am also one of the Essendon Members who signed the Special Resolution to change the Essendon Constitution that is to be voted on in the coming weeks (no, it wasn’t a petition). Any chance we can get you to come out in support of the special resolution?

Thanks
Where can we find the Special Resolution?

Melissa Verner Green turning up on Blitz is like Joe Daniher wearing a tie to a best and fairest count

It’s surprising yet tantalising at the same time, full of myriad connotations and wildly varying interpretations

Thanks for asking @Realitycheck ,

It will be up to the Club to send the proposed Special Resolution out to members for a vote prior to the Essendon AGM. Based on the date of the Essendon AGM, I would guess that this might happen towards the end of November.
However, if you want to read the special resolution and the Statement in Support, you can visit the NoPE website (https://nope.org.au/agm/).

The resolution is a pretty conservative one, so I am hoping that even the Club will support it.
