and he’s got a job to keep the playing group together and positive in order to minimise any damage from player discontent amongst the kids
I don’t think the coaches box were that upset with how the game played out to be honest.
Whenever they put the cameras up there Stanton looked in good spirits.
The dampner was (May injury) plus when Eagles got that run on (8 goals in a row) but it is refreshing when the coach notices small things like the fans do. Ginbey - Caddy matchup, Robey Reid Matchup, need to work on outside spread.
Has an idea on how we want to play …a game plan. (ground ball better tonight, maybe Tsatas helped this)
Opposition were good. we could have been better.
Its been a tough week.
Keen to see Reid go forward.
Atleast he tried something different. The list balance is ■■■■■■ and we have minimal talent
Makes sense, it looked like we were trying to beat ourselves last night by continually kicking it to the opposition.
This is the gold standard for our coach these days.
I know this has been said before, your are not going to win too many games if you only kick eight goals!
He needs to cut back on the nose touching/twitching throughout the interview, it was doing my head in. I’m guessing nerves first up.
Thats a skill kicking the footy
What else can they do? Put on boots and go out there for them? Its a terrible list. Scott just made it worse with no clear direction & leadership.
Fixed it
I agree that there is not much we can do right now with all our injuries. Brad should have done something when we had players available, like drop players that can’t hit a target.
Solly only had 2 days to prepare with a list suffering from a not insignificant injury toll with another one early on during the game.
At least the players looked like they had some idea of what they were trying to do even when playing in Perth during a cyclone with the the usual West Coast umpiring.
That really ticked me off. Late in the last qtr the camera pans to Stanton and he is laughing it up- then must of seen himself on tv because he quickly went serious
Obviously the contest is super important but something that concerned me in his press conference is it being so much about that. This is also a Hird style (going off his last time in the big seat) and I know it’s definitely a McCartney coaching style. Setting the foundations of ‘contest’ in a young team might be a good base, but it’s the same outdated philosophy of Voss and Brad.
The game these days is all about ball movement, speed and agility at the centre bounce and using precise kicking skills which the stand rule allows (ie the Hawks). The 90s to early 2000s generation of players that become coaches might be a bit stuck in the past with this ‘all about the contest’ mindset, it’s outdated now.
“He’s got to take the lead and make the others follow”
If he was on the bench he might’ve been able to convey the message more often.
I gonna assume setting up at the contest is crucial to having the right structure to then move the ball out and onwards. The onwards bit is then, as you say, about fast forward ball movement.
I’m happy for the rest of the year under Solomon to be about getting that discipline into the players. And enforcing standards at training and during games to execute properly. Almost treat it like being in pre-season.
Yes it was. But I wonder how refreshing it will be come round 23.
We don’t have much speed anyway, the more agile players are injured and despite recent improvements via the draft, it’s still a less than great kicking list.
And you still have to win - or neutralize- more contests than you lose.
Incidentally, if you were picking a side based purely on good kicks as the priority then I’d have Farrow, Kondo, Robey, Johnson, Gerreyn, Kako, Nguyen, Ridley, Martin as the majority of those first selected. Most of those are just kids and too many of them are currently injured. It’s turning around , but it’ll take time.
Maybe he was laughing at how much of a laughing stock our coaching setup is
