Dodoro on Cal Twomey's 'Road to the Draft' podcast

Tend to agree with ya Rhino. We spent alotta tickets (not including Laycock and Kepler) building a spine that clubs would be envious of only to have them capitulate with injury/walk.
Now we’ve been out of the business end of the draft, for what is essentially 5 years - + And we are faced with some srs conundrums.
We NEED talls, but our A grade mid stocks are srsly anemic.

Great listen.

When we had players with currency we had a fire sale and got zip, then when the next group with any currency came along that’s all we had so couldn’t or wouldnt trade , then those guys stagnated and lost thier currency. then when some got some currency they decided to leave and we got bent over, then we lost draft picks . irrespective of the reasons, it’s been a disastrous 15 years at the draft and trade table but it all started with the prince of CEOs Peter Jackson mathematical error and we are yet to recover .

A great listen, but I too got a laugh out of the Sheeds school of getting the spine right when we've watched teams with dominant midfields and average forwards win the flag for the last decade.
The odd thing is, getting your forwards first then getting the midfield is probably the riskiest thing you can do as midfielders generally perform at a higher standard quicker whereas talls take a few years before you see glimpses. You could waste years on the wrong talks whereas you would know quicker and be able to react quick enough to failed midfielders. The other thing is it's generally accepted that you can get decent midfielders later on in the draft so the you should be able to focus on talks when the opportunity arises. While we've done well with picks after 20 (Merrett, Hocking, Howlett) we probably haven't gotten as many top end midfielders late as other teams have in the past. Sydney got Hannebery and Parker late. The Hawks got Sewell and Mitchell late. Geelong got Bartel and a whole heap of others.

I’m hoping we change philosophy and get our midfield in place then go hard for young talls.

Should of taken the Carlton approach and invested in the midfield first.

I agree…teams I see doing well have about 10-12 quality mids in the side rotating around the ground. This is why if we do get Saints pick I would pick up Parish and Francis. Francis can easily play a mid but you can put him forward to kick 2-3 goals…also can play off half back if need be. Hawks control the footy all around the ground with Mids who make good decisions with skill.

A great listen, but I too got a laugh out of the Sheeds school of getting the spine right when we've watched teams with dominant midfields and average forwards win the flag for the last decade.
Never heard of this team called... Hawthorn or something?

Still easily won a flag after losing their best forward.

Was interesting Dodoro at the last second changed his mind and told them to say Zach Merretts name for pick 26. Just had an instinct he would be great. Very happy now
Adrian actually made that call himself on the night. He actually was supposed to select Lobb who went to GWS but as it came to our selection, he changed his mind and selected Zach.

Love that he went with gut instinct in that situation. Draft sanctions, Crameri gone, turmoil, picked the natural footballer. Well done.

Agree. Dodoro is very very underrated. Many other clubs would love him as their list manager.
Dodo Much maligned or mediocre or a bit of both who knows. A Recurring EFC theme! Either way the lack of drafting a midfield jet in this era of midfield jets the last 15 years when virtually every other AFL club has, is a blight on his recruiting record and EFC. Surely he must land one this year.

Heppell? Merrett? Laverde? Did he not draft these guys?

Not 1 Brownlow between them…to me that means ■■■■ recruiting.

Let’s see, since 2008 Hawthorn have played in 4 grand finals and will have played in 5 by the end of next weekend, they have currently won 3 of those. How many Brownlow Medalists do they have in their team?

…cos they still have Roughead, Hale and Gunston left.

Hawks picked (from memory) not just Rough (#2) and Franklin (#5) and Cyril (#13), but also the busts that they had a go at - Thorp (#6?) whichever Beau was the tall one… Dowler? (another top 10 pick), and added Hale (former pick 8 that they traded in) and Gunston (former first round pick that they traded in).
That, along with Breust (NSW scholarship?) and Puopolo (pick 50-something) is their forward line.
They’ve effectively spent about ~7 first or second round picks (including what they gave away in trades), plus some later picks. Tall forwards, it’s about 5 first rounders over the past decade - mostly in the 04-08 sort of era.

No way we’ve used as many resources on tall forwards. Gumby (pick 2) and… who else?? I don’t even think we’ve had as many early picks as they’ve completely wasted on tall forwards.

But I’m sure they have 40 guys who all finish top 10 in the b&f every year!

I love Disco and his mixed metaphors. Great call to pull his finger out of the fire and nail his balls to the mast with the Merrett pick.

Good point - Hawthorn’s list has 28 failures on it. Even the twelve who get premiership medallions each year but don’t get top 10 in the b&f. How on earth are they successful given that most of their list are failures?

I agree. I highly rate him. Just twats online bag him out saying how bad our recruiting is because simply off the gumbleton pick and the few crap selection of players previously. Look at the last 6 years he's done pretty solid in my opinion.

They got Gunston, Hale, Lake, Frawley and Gibson via trade. That’s a large percentage of talks that they trading in for rather than drafted and developed.

All of their midfielders were drafted. Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis were all drafted at the year before Buddy and Roughead.

I think that’s what we’re getting at here. It is far easier to go into a draft and focus on midfielders than the other way around.

Slightly concerned about the lack of talk regarding specialised small forward though, that being said it didn’t come up

Maybe because their supporters are loyal and not a bunch of whining prats who bag their own players at every opportunity?

Or maybe their supporters do bag their own players at every opportunity, but they’re not given many opportunities.

Shoenmakers cops a fair bit

Tough business this recruitin’.

Come on, even Buddy copped bronx cheers in 2012/13 when he was out of form.
