For those not on Twitter, Jono’s put together a couple of threads that we thought we’d share here that can be accessible even if you don’t have Twitter.

Firstly, an in-depth review of the West Coast game, with pictures and videos.

And a look at the impact midfielders across the competition have on generating scores and where Parish sits in regard to this.

In terms of the knocks on Parish, I would be interested to see where Parish also ranks on tackles per game, and clangers per game amongst that list of top 50 mids

I had a quick look and if the top 20 players for centre clearances per game, Parish gets the 4th least tackles and the 9th most clangers.

Those are fair criticisms.

I will say that his raw tackle numbers probably have something to do with the fact that we’re a low-tackling side already, most Essendon players are going to be low down on those numbers. He has a better tackle average per game than a Ben Hobbs, who most fans would say probably works harder defensively than Parish.

As to Clangers, he has the fourth highest disposals in the comp playing in the most congested position, he’s probably going to have a few clangers. A better judge of how he compares would be a disposals per clanger ratio and use that to get a sense of how he compares to other players.

For example, Darcy averages a Clanger every 7.3 disposals. By comparison, Clayton Oliver has a clanger every 6.35 disposals and Tom Green has one every 6.16

Another assessment of Parish’s disposal:

  • 22.4% of his disposals are score involvements. Of the top 40 highest average disposal getters in the league, that is 17th. Petracca and Bont are up the top near 30%

  • 17.6% of his disposals are turnovers. That is 19th of that group of 40. Tim Kelly and Rozzee are the ‘worst’ at 23%. Surprisingly, Cripps and Daicos are the best at 12%

  • if we look at differential, Parish is + 4.8%. So overall, a positive impact on the team. It is will below the best players, who are above + 10%. However he is middle of the pack at 19th.

It’s clear his kicking in space can be an issue, but we look at him holistically, he’s not having a negative impact on the team. And compared to peers, he’s pretty ‘average’

Not surprised that Daicos has the best turnover ratio given he’s spent a lot of time playing off half back, easier to have effective disposals when you have more time and space in that area of the ground.

I also think if you’re comparing Parish based on pure disposals, that will impact where he ranks given you’re looking at him against half backs, wingers and outside midfielders. I think the better comparison is against those who are playing inside as it’s a similar role.

Good work though, thanks for sharing it

Yep. I forgot to say, that includes a few defenders like Sicily, Sinclair and Daicos (couldn’t be bothered removing them)

This is elite.

Thanks so much for sharing.

I think contested possessions would be the best stat to rank players of Parishs role instead of disposals.

A few of those Parish turnover videos didnt work for me, not sure why. I could click play but nothing would happen. Of the ones that I could watch, about 9 of them, most were just kicks to contests that went to ground or our forwards lost, sometimes under pressure. I guess im wondering whats the reasoning behind highlighting all of Parishs turnovers, even the ones that dont particularly deserve criticism, and not highlighting the turnovers from his team mates?

The main reason was that Parish is the one that’s most criticised for his disposal and people use turnover stats to justify it. When you actually see what those turnover’s look like it changes perceptions of what’s actually happening.

Here’s another stat for you.

On the weekend, Parish had 7 kicks inside 50.

2 led to goals
2 led to behinds
3 led to turnovers.

Merrett had 5 kicks inside 50
0 goals
0 behinds

5 turnovers

Okay fair enough, thats definitely what I got out of those videos but I guess the way it was presented through the article counting all his turnovers gave me the impression you were being critical of them or blaming them for our poor performance like so many do with Parish. I wonder if other readers got the same impression I did or if they also picked up on the turnovers not actually being deserving of much criticism. It seems like we are on the same page though!

this one happens all the time. It’s happening because everyone is geared for the long ball. it’s been happening for years, YEARS! Menzie is thinking get back to the feat of pete, fair enough. flip is thinking get back to the square for a long ball, he’s been conditioned for it. in reality he’s taking langford’s leading space and not leading to the space on the flank as you say

Another Jono twitter thread, this one regarding the Score Involvement impact of Darcy Parish and Zach Merrett and what this means for match outcomes
