Luckily public transport is becoming great. At least in the inner suburbs here.
I use a combination of public transport and then ride share and i estimate I am well ahead of private care ownership.
Mrs Handypoint owns an old car though and it’s useful as a runabout to do things like sport/beach trips, weekends away out of town or a big food shop.
(So do have access to a vehicle).
Im not sure why anyone drives around in a nice car unless they need to do a lot of driving. Why bother?
Reckon i can go rideshare - train - rideshare to pretty much anywhere cheaper than driving a car with petrol, tolls and depreciation/maintenance factored in.
Anecdotal, but a friend in Alexandria was forced to move because of the build up in offices, street car parking only and changes in the bus route, which are frequent.
Proximity to Fixed rail for PT is less chancy.
Can blitz be my careers counsellor? Hope so 'cos I’m in need of a career change. Been in the wrong job for far too long. I’m not sure which path to go down but I’ll be starting from scratch. I need something that can see me make use of my talents which I believe/have been told are as follows:
Disputes resolution
Written word
Spoken word
Strong moral compass
Intuition
Analytical mind
I’ve considered that but I’ve got to leave the industry entirely. Being in the wrong industry for you personally is toxic, especially when that industry is toxic regardless.
You could check out the free TAFE courses on the go if you are looking for a new direction which would involve special qualifications additional to the ones you have.
I had a redundancy this year and part of the exit was a consultant to get me back into work.
They had three purposes/tasks:
Coaching - we met fortnightly for 3 months to discuss what I was thinking / doing / following up
Job Concierge - set up a job search ( this wasn’t helpful at all)
Resume writer - this helped enough for me to recommend.
There was a high $$ attached to this. But if you can find people to network with and perhaps a mentor/coaxh. You’re halfway there without spending the money. Get someone, or try AI to help with the resume writing.
The other thing that was helpful was being more active on LinkedIn. Yes, it sucked balls. But one of my posts ended up getting a couple of phone calls from C Suite people asking for me to meet with them about upcoming roles.
Check out industry bodies/groups and representative organisations. There’s something for every industry and interest group, but they usually have small workforces where people pitch in on everything.
You would have a core job, for example answering the phones or processing memberships, but you’d also end up doing things with marketing, events, PR, research etc. Then you might find one of those things really interests you.
Keep an eye out for who gets quoted in news stories about issues then check out the organisation if it’s interesting to you.
When I was in grade 3, another boy told me that c##t was a bad word. So I asked the teacher, whose name was Miss Garrett in class. She calmly told me that it was a very bad word, and that none was us should ever repeat it.
Of course, all of us little catholic boys proceeded to us that word at every opportunity, until one of the nuns heard two boys calling others that word. The assistant Parish Priest was called and both boys were hit severely ten times with a thick leather strap in front of everyone.
Didn’t stop use of that word, we just looked around first to see who was watching.
