Last time I played (late 80’s/early 90’s) I was a wizard and my name was ‘Sharous’.
All I remember were ‘the night things’ ???
Scary !

I’d be interested if you would be okay to send me links as well? I played from first and second edition and through the lockdowns.
I’d suggest Stranger Things might have a bit to do with recent popularity.
There’s a bunch of different online platforms. You’ll generally need to pay out money to use more than the most basic material though, or play with a DM who does.. And I’ve found it isn’t always the best way to start as a newbie, you end up having to learn the game rules at the same time as you’re learning the software, which can be a bit of a mouthful.
D&D beyond is the official one. It has all the stuff to step you through creating characters etc, and you can play online too. It’s probably more focused around helping out running a tabletop game than running completely online.
Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds are platforms specifically for playing the game (and various other games too) online. They generally have better map etc capabilities than dndbeyond, though roll20 can integrate with it.
The rules these days are basically open source. You can find a pretty complete (if bare-bones) copy of them here, and they are of course on DnDBeyond too. And most of the official material is available in wikis online too, just without all the nice art etc.
It certainly helped, but it was one factor of many. Covid lockdowns were a huge boost, as people looked for hobbies you could do at home or online. And the rise of streaming platforms and the wild success of live-play streams like Critical Role and others have also been a factor. Recently there’s been lots of people who’ve been brought in after playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
I see HM already beat me to it.
But if you use discord I found a couple of amazing games though this
My two current campaigns came from their LFG page.
You can also post as a player and see if anyone has an open spot.
Good luck I hope you find a great game.
