Earthquake!

The Anatolian plate has moved westward between 3.3 and 5 meters.

As the small physical corridor for the UN humanitarian agency in north Syria has been blocked by the quake, the volunteer White Helmets are the only ones there.
The White Helmets Twitter account records the deaths of some of them as well as their families.
The account also registered thanks to the Egypt Government for technical help ( presumably with Assad approval)
As with Turkey, Australia’s financial aid will be through the UN and Red Crescent

Latest updated casualty prediction. I’m avoiding bombarding this thread.

Good time to donate, the Red Crescent in Turkey is probably solid, but I’d avoid the Syrian version as the Assad regime steers the funds away from the disaster area. Find other options in Syria as they can desperately use the help. White Helmets probably a good option.

Syria is getting a fraction of the international support because Assad and Russia have the border checkpoints closed and are demanding all aid be funnelled through the regime, rather than directly to rebel areas.

Suggest donations go through recognised charities here which have set up special arrangements for Turkey and Syria ( also tax deductible)

Wellington has a dam wall built across 2 fault lines.

Hope all is well @Stressed_out

So they expect a quake along the fault lines in/near Turkey every 250 years. Thats way over the lifetime of buildings, so why spend money on quake proof construction, when most likely it will not be needed in the life of the building. Concrete is cheaper than steel.

That is apparently the risk / cost decision that is so easy to make, but could lead to disaster and great loss of life in this era.

Constant seismic shocks damaging buildings, then another quake on the Syrian Turkish border.
Australians and Syrians with families in Australia would be desperate.
Australia didn’t have any diplomatic or consular reps in Syria before the Syrian War, but was able to piggyback through assistance provided through Embassies like Canada.
Since the War most of the Western Embassies shut shop and operate through smaller missions like the Czechs.
In Australia, Syria only has an honorary consul, in Bankstown, would not be equipped to have a full time office to respond to inquiries ( even if it could obtain any information for families)
