EFC Delistings 2025 [spec]

As a complete aside, here’s a clause from the CBA that seems like it gets de factor ignored

19.4 (e) A Club and a Player will not include provision in a Standard Playing Contract which would entitle either party to unilaterally exercise an option to extend the term of a Player’s contract.

We’re all going to say awful things about you on here, it’s part of the process.

I’m assuming the “unilaterally” is the important bit there?

I guess it depends what it means. When people say “2 years with a player option for another 5” or whatever, that sounds like it would allow the player to unilaterally exercise the option to extend the term of their contract. I’m sure it makes sense in context. Probably.

If I’m getting a paid out at the average AFL wage (~$420k plus super, ■■■■■), I’ll be too busy partying in Ibiza to care.

If we’re a year of Guelfi away from the max possible salary cap, we’ve got issues.

Or should I say, one more issue.

For how long before you realise you now have no career?

I’m only talking about me.

It would suck for actual AFL players.

Guelfi, meet the west coast eagles.

Can’t be worse than Owies for them.

Are you wanting this to happen or saying he has met them?

I agree, but it is possible if we’re front loading the hell out of some of our larger contracts. The ability to pay over 100% based on paying under 100% in previous years has an expiry date. Even if you’ve got a ■■■■ list, it makes sense to occasionally use that provision to reduce the size of some bigger contracts for future years. We could be in a year like that.

And one year of Guelfi, two years of Jones, and one year of Cox is a million dollars of payout, minimum.

I’m introducing them to each other.

It’s probably time he explores something back home in WA if he wants to extend his career.

Wonder how much we ate up bumping up Merrett and I think we did that to one or two others as well.

It’s probably insignificant in the scheme of things I guess.

I reckon it’s one spot (Guelfi) we need to create.

Two or three would be nice, but in reality we’d be trading before cutting that many contracted players.

Not much happening and no Nino.

Yeah, I’d be surprised if we can’t afford to pay out one year of one guy who’s probably on not much more than minimum.

In the broader delisting bloodletting discussion (and I’m pro cutting the hell out of the list), I was just flagging it because it comes up a lot, sometimes to the point of contracts that it’s almost impossible we’d be able to pay out, partly because a lot of people assume that the cap hit will be over the course of the contract, not immediate.

I suppose the final note would be that the termination payment is based on the competition the player last played in, so if you were going to be properly ruthless, you’d play them in the VFL and then terminate them.

It all does sound like cutting a couple is still thoroughly doable if you have a plan and a clue.

So: not possible for EFC.

That’s incredibly petty and awesome at the same time, and a shame VFL had finished as maybe Gresh would have had a late call up to don the VFL sash.

What do you think would be more achievable out of Just paying out Guelfi, presuming no takers via trade, or finding a trade partner for Gresh and paying half his salary for his final year?

it’s as true as it was widely reported Scott wanted to go down a rebuild path.

guess it depends who you listen to
