Good point frosty. Having the weight very low helps. I’m suss because every time I go down the Great Ocean Rd or roads linking I get stuck behind some plonker whirring along at 40 in a white electric MG. I think tourists rent them.
Yes I know, Mrs Hambo had a recent 2.0 manual MX5. I found it small and underpowered. It’s just me, I like lots of oomph but good handling.
Oh and @Bacchusfox I drove an Adventra a few years back before settling on a Subaru Outback, I found the Adventra very bargey.
As far as current EV options go I reckon the Cupra Leon sportstourer looks pretty good. Lower than the SUVs @frosty and a bit of go with good handling dynamics. There’s also the hatch but it has less guts.
Yeah same auto group. I seriously looked at the Cupras, the interiors and fittings are lovely but the whole ipad control garbage really turned me off. Give me dials and switches any day.
Well to be fair the standard models were just Commodore wagons, but Mrs Fox had a highly modified suspension and large V8, bigger wheels, some super exhaust system and it drove really. I still cannot believe she became a Tesla person as she was a massive petrol head.
It does 0 to 100 kph in 2.8 sec. He loves getting a passenger in the car and flooring it, and scaring the crap out of them. I was ready for it and still shocked me at it acceleration.
Ioniq 5N is seriously quick at 3.4 sec and a lot cheaper, but still over $110,000 on road. I am happy with my Model 3 which gets me speeding tickets quicker than I want.
Weight is a real problem for EVs, but it is being solved. The power stored per kilogram of battery weight is increasing, but at the moment the total weight of the cars is not going down because the extra power stored is being used to extend the range of the EV. I presume there will come a time when the range is considered great enough, and then we’ll see the battery weights start to come down. I’m hoping this all happens within about 3 years. My car is partly financed over 3 years, and when it’s paid off I would hope to be able to get a good small-medium sized SUV EV with a real-world range of about 650km and total weight about 1.8 tonnes.
That model Tesla gets down to 2.1 seconds 0 to 100, which is insane, and they corner well for a heavy car, but the Ionic 5 is much more comfortable in corners. Particularly the N line.
And though the one owner in here is downplaying how good it is to drive, for me, in every day driving, it’s by far and away the best car I’ve ever driven on the road. Not just its performance, but the automation and anticipation with adaptive cruise control on or off. It’s much less inclined to stab the brakes on like other adaptive cruise control systems, and when not driving it like a lunatic, it anticipates and responds to other traffic almost perfectly. They also had a pretty aggressive charging curve for road trips, even in their earlier years. They unfortunately have a few specific issues, but overall, they’re a very nice driver’s car.
