Electric Motor Vehicles

Sounds damn complicated to me.

Heating and other accessories, especially airconditioning, affect the fuel consumption of ICE cars too, though much less than they used to, and I think much less than EVs.

This photo illustrates what I mentioned a few weeks ago. In China, the blue license plates are for ICE cars and the greenish ones are for EVs. In the area of the city I visited, EVs were over half the cars on the road

My car tells me what i need to do to drive at its most efficient when i’m on longer road trips, and most cases it’s slow down a bit, but more like drop your speed by 4kph to gain 3% better range sort of thing

like this. Literally from my trip just now:

Might be a politiky thing (always seems to be with an electric car)

But it seems the EU is hell bent on making electric cars more expensive by ending subsidies from the Chinese government.

Not sure if this is protectionism or a genuine issue.

EU uses countervailing duties ( unfair competition) as a protectionist measure, in line with foreign policy justifying strategic defence security to reorient to self sufficiency in domestic production.
The US is more upfront, uses the security exemption in its WTO obligations to reintroduce 100% tariffs under the Buy America Act.
Comparative advantage, as a measure to deliver benefits to the consumer and reducing the budgetary costs of supporting domestic industry, is no longer a thing. Adam Smith is rolling in his grave.

There are benefits with Australia having no motor vehicle industry to benefit from this…but I bet we don’t.

China looking more at south Asia and even Africa as destinations for their EV’s
China also investing lots into battery technology for solar and commercial use -ie storage for wing/solar power etc.

Harley Davidson have made big bikkies out of that.

Although there have been suggestions that Australia is among the most promising markets , dependent on the PMV and a more affluent society that can afford the price ( plus the high petrol pump price).

In contrast, Australia uses the ā€œcomplete surrenderā€ policy, perfected by Tony Abbott and his fat slug of a Treasurer who dared car manufacturers to close all their Australian operations.

And not forgetting the famous Australia tax, so beloved of multinationals fearlessly overcharging us compared to other countries.

The Button Car Plan went through so many iterations with dinky little tweaks, rorts galore , subsidies so the car makers would stay.
The money would have been better spent on R&D assistance to get high class technology goods and services to market.

Ah Harleys. The only bike to convert petrol to noise without the addition of power.

VROOM VROOM !!

Does anyone know how bikes are allowed to be so noisy? I thought there were quite strict regulations about engine noise.

So the LNP are going all in on Nuclear.

But there’s multiple pieces of legislation that prohibit nuclear power plants.

How hard is it to change this sort of legislation ?

You can promise all manner of imaginary things when you are zero chance of being elected.

Following the French decision to impose countervailing duties on Chinese EVs, questions have been raised as to the extent to which it will preserve the French ( and European ) auto sector.
It is claimed that the French and others in Europe made the miss step of concentrating on production of EVs at the luxury end of the market. China did the opposite and hence has a larger domestic and global market.
