We didn't have many midfielders out. Fair enough Jobe and Goddard, but Melksham and Myers are not big losses.
We had Stanton, Zaka, Hocking, Heppell and Howlett tonight, who all get a game as midfielders in our best 22. With normal injuries, you would expect to be missing one or two most of the time.
Melksham and Myers not big losses..... LOL.
Add Watson and Goddard to that list and its half a midfield missing.
Theres only so much half of your midfield can do.
Liked the look of Ashby and the new Merrett was very handy, Leroy looked good for a while but then seemed to snap back to old ways…
Whilst Hardy takes some very unlikely marks I just think his indecision and poor general disposal means he is not going to be a regular, similar for Colyer, disappointingly I think it may as well be the end of the road for those two.
A lot to like, still seen a lot if the old issues with the forward line, but definitely some improvement…
I don‘t care how good good Ablett and the Ablettes are… if you play the half-dozen top-tenners (ruck, midfielders, Fletcher) instead of the half-dozen 30th-something-ranked players, you can bet that game would have been shut down at the end.
That free and goal for the headbutt charge with a few minutes to go was garbage. I thought it was clear that headbutter is supposed to get penalised. Take that incorrect decision away and we won.
All in all some decent play but got very sloppy in the last quarter.
yep that was utter crap, aylett was standing there and the headbutter got up and went straight into his chest then all the gc players had the guts to go over and push aylett for 'making high contact', absoloute joke.
Not to mention the Joe getting chopped over the shoulder and not getting the obvious free.Either way, we shouldn't have let it get that close.
and also just before the guy headbutted aylett, their full forward think it was lynch at the time? went the ball was kicked in deep gave the biggest push in the back to gleeson and the ump called play on.
what about when the ump called a free to kav for a push in the back and then gc kicked the ball away and you hear the ump say 50 m for kicking th eball away then when i ball came back to kav to take the kick the ump didn't even know what he said and got confused and just gave the normal free without the 50!
To be fair there is no way that was in the back. Swallow performed a perfect tackle on Kav!

I honestly thought the free was holding the ball, it was if the ump pointed in the wrong direction then the ball ended up in kava hands and the ump just went along with it... Lol
Big tick for Ashby and Thurlow. They could start round 1. Zach. M looked good but rushed his handballs and turned it over but loved his couple of tackles.
Hibberd looked out of sorts particularly his poor marking causing direct goals.very important player. Hope he has an even better year this year.
Zacka, hope he plays like this every game. Looking forward to seeing Edwards.
Hated losing this game. Would have been nice to win it.
Lack of composure was frustrating and the injury to Browne is so disappointing for the kid; let’s hope for some good news there.
I thought Howlett and Zaka really stood up and took charge of the midfield. Stants started really well, Heppell was okay, Hocking did a reasonable job on Ablett (bar a few lapses in concentration where he gave him a couple meters of space goal-side at a stoppage).
As for the kids, it’s just so friggin exciting to see glimpses of what Joe is capable of. I really liked the look of Ashby and Gleeson off HBF; they both need a bit of size still, but they’re very clean with their ball use and seem to make good decisions. Thurlow showed a bit which was pleasing and I stand by comments I made in the latest training report that we’ll see a lot of the Merrett brothers in the senior side this year.
I thought Ryder looked really solid and I was really impressed with Jetta; lots of third and fourth efforts there, plus he seemed to be taking the first option and IMO he’s still one of our best kicks to advantage. Not giving up on him yet.
As for the Carlisle/Hurley debate, the jury is still out IMO…early days though, of course. Steinberg didn’t get a whole lot of opportunities but what I like about him is that he rarely loses a contest. Hardingham will continue to drive me mental.
Hopefully we see Myers, Melksham and a few more youngsters next week…reckon Edwards has a fair bit of talent and I’d like to see how Ambrose and Fantasia go.
We can make all the excuses we like, but this was about as bad a loss as it could have been. We had this game won, done and dusted, and then from about two-thirds through the third quarter we relaxed intensity. Gold Coast kept playing hard and they won. In reality there are no excuses. We should have won but didn’t play with enough intensity. Not good enough, and I hope that Thompson gives them a full-scale bollocking for losing a game that we should have won comfortably.
