Essendon vs Orange Pus review thread - 2023 round 4

Most of Thornbury could hear me swearing at the umps.

But… we won the weekend.

Really liked Menzie’s game, love ADJ will be a star when he understands the game plan and gets confidence within the team environment. Perkins had a bad day; but, persisted and still played he’s part in the win.

Adam Kingsley may be a big unit, but he has nothing on our BDB.

They paid more than half of the frees in the final quarter?

On another day Stringer kicks 8 and we win by 10 goals. Better we do today in a development year and not an important one

Yes. Something like a total of 5 free paid to half time. It was amazing how many tackles were laid without frees being paid for HTB\incorrect disposal.

We’re developing but gees, such a frustrating game to watch.

Would be nice if we could just put a crap side away without making such hard work of it - should have added 10 goals to that margin.

WTF were those marking decisions?

Merret’s non-goal - give me a break.

Lucky GWS were ■■■■■■■ than us with their disposals.

We’ve played no one really - and that includes the Saints so while 3-1 is a good start, we need to be 5-3 by the end of Round 8 with wins over Port and one of Geelong, Collingwood or Melbourne.

Can we please take our time kicking into Forward 50, lower the eyes and trajectory and have a forward lead onto the ball.

Jones - if you’re in the forward 50’- have a shot. It’s what forwards are paid to do.

Astounding isn’t it?
Up to half time it was 2 frees a piece in our game. Not sure what the numbers were at the end.

At the beginning of the last quarter in the Swans Port game it was 28 to 19 and finished 32 to 22.

There must be someone who kicked a couple of goals in the twos today !

Good win in the end but should have been 10 goals

Positives
Phillips and Draper must be played in tandem every week. It’s not even up for debate we are a better side with both of them.

Defence held up despite numerous screw ups.

Effort all over the ground is getting better

Menzie was part of 10 plus scoring shots.

Nick Martin getting back to his best

Stringer kicking 4.

Jones had a dip is getting there

NEGATIVES:::

Stringer missing 6 and our accuracy was deplorable

Jones has no confidence to take a shot

For all of those having a go at Jones, Perkins is due just as much criticism but because he is a high draft pick gets away with it.

Before the concussion Weed wasn’t doing much we were better when he went off.

Changes for Melbourne

Out

Weed, Heppell, Caldwell

In

Hobbs, Voss, Snelling

I reckon there’s a really really good chance we win more than we lose and still miss out. I think there’s a lot of clubs on 10, 11 & 12 wins.

It’s all about honesty though. If the club knows where they’re at, and don’t throw the toys out of the cot based on 9th or 11th, it’s fine. I don’t trust them, though.

Did you mean Davey with this one?

Heppell was actually quite good today.

Being at the game L1 I couldn’t tell why the marks weren’t being paid, are we whinging or was the umpiring that blatantly bad?

The giants opponents have all kicked more points than goals

Round 1: 18 points to 12 goals
Round 2 16 points to 14 goals
Round 3 20 points to 9 goals.

Putting todays “inaccurate” kicking to goal down to simply our forwards inability to convert is incredulous.

GWS have a good quality defence, especially without the footy.

We played very well and we defended generally very well across the ground.

Good to see us generate some goals in the second half and win.

Thought the umpiring was poor and i didn’t understand the interpretation of paying a contested mark. We were clearly robbed three times jn front of goal and I think the giants may have copped one too.

Jones is playing in the toughest position on the ground but I haven’t seen enough this year (or last year) to suggest he is going to be a long term solution as a key forward.

Yes, he’s young. Yes, KPP take years to develop. But there’s a lot not going right for him and it’s detrimental to the team.

TIPPA and Snelling.

The first, at least, is used to being CHF.
