“The Well At The World’s End” a two volume novel by William Morris is widely and properly regarded as the first great novel in this genre, decades before Lord Of The Rings. I have read it twice and loved it both times.
Thanks @Captain_Jack . Sounds intriguing. I must admit I have never read it. I will put it on my to read list.
I found it at Project Gutenberg. Here is the link for anyone who wants it:
The Project Gutenberg E-text of The Well at the World’s End, by William Morris
It wasn’t Morris’ first attempt in the genre, but it is his classic, l consider it his best, but have not read everything he has written. Tolkien probably did and there are some obvious parallels. Morris was a genius, a modern Renaissance man. Apart from writing and textile design he also designed pottery and a bridge that is still standing l believe near Bristol. Sadly he died a penniless drunk in the gutter.
It is sad how many creative individuals throughout history did not receive the acknowledgment or rewards during or after their lifetimes for their contributions and work.
On Steampunk, if anyone is unfamiliar.

My personal First Law of Steampunk is ‘all good steampunk novels have female protagonists’.
Dunno why, and it’s not to say that there’s no BAD steampunk with female main characters, but it’s a pretty solid rule of thumb.
Great cover artwork. I love that stuff.
@Humble_Minion Any suggestions for some exciting Steampunk novels / Novellas / Short stories for our fellow thread afficianados?
I love Frank Frazzetta’s art, especially the Conan stuff. He spawned a whole genre of fantasy art, a lot of which featured female nudity. (Maybe the 60’s and 70’s were a less prudish era.)
I was a comic nut growing up in the 80s but used to collect mostly 2nd hand stuff from the 70s. I loved the old Creepy and Erie stuff. Frazetta did a lot of cover work for them. Theyre all long gone unfortunately, but I bought a good amount of the Dark Horse hard cover reissues.
I wish Id kept buying them coz I just love the artwork, but I eventually stopped buying them.
I had a lot of those mythical posters on my bedroom walls when I was a teenager.
It would be fair to say that a lot of them had very well drawn women as the central theme.
