Father Son Watch

Hope Mrs Davey has some taller genes than her husband!

Quiet week this week.  NeitherNeagle or Thompson played, not sure why.

Clothier 17 touches at 53% effective, 3 marks, 2 tackles, kicked 1.1 in a win against a Boyd-less Eastern.  Pretty low-possession game as a whole, not many guys reached the 20 touch mark, so probably better than it sounds.  And it was at ■■■■■■ Craigieburn so I'm sure it was a howling gale which absolutely destroys everyone's kicking.  Stupid place to build a footy ground.

Both Calder and Murray made the finals, so all three of the TAC guys (assuming Thompson and Neagle come back from wherever it is they were this week...) will be playing at Pricefixer Park on the weekend for anyone who wants to take a look.

Bit of Harvey Daniher news - played 14 games in the Riverina u17s this year for 18 goals and 5 times in the best.  As a Riverina kid he might be zoned to the Bushrangers and get some TAC Cup time that way - he's got another 2 years before he's draftable though.  Just going from memory though, if the stats are to be believed he's currently doing better than Neagle did at the same age in a similar country league.

Matthew Neagle is playing seniors at Walla at the moment, at age I think 15 or 16.  4 games for 2 goals and once in the best in the seniors, 2 games for 2 goals and once in the best in the reserves, 14 games for 2 goals and 3 times in the best in the u17s.

Nathan Neagle (who I think is 16-17 at the moment) has played 15 u17 games for 3 goals and 3 times in the best.  Played one senior game too.

Jaxon Neagle (yes, with an 'x') is 14 or so, and has played 18 u17 games for 5 goals and 6 times in the best plus 4 u14 games for 3 goals.

(I haven't sat down and matched up all the dates of the games the Neagles' have played, but I suspect they're playing 2 games a weekend each at least some of the time, which will affect their performance.  If they get into the Murray system then the Bushrangers fitness staff will soon put a stop to that nonsense...)

If we get done for 2 years in the draft, there will at least be the silver lining of getting Jake Long for a 3rd round pick.

Unless they change the rules… again.

Its probably not possible but could we still get Neagle and Clothier?

Humble Minion

There was a Neagle tribute match over the weekend (if I am correct) where all money raised went to or involved something with the Neagles.

Pretty sure Jydon played

Hmm.  It's possible.  Three of the four Walla Neagles (not Jaxon, who's probably too young, and not Jay, who's up in Qld if I remember right) played for Walla seniors against Brock/Burrum last weekend.  Might have been a tribute match, I dunno - if not, Jydon must have seriously ■■■■■■ off someone at Murray, cos he's their top goalkicker and they were playing for a spot in the finals last weekend....

Walla got done by 20 goals mind you.  Jydon kicked 3, both he and Matthew named in the best - though that last bit might possibly have been charity given the circumstances.

HM, are adopted kids eligible under the father/son rule and if so how long do they have to be adopted for? For instance if Fletch adopted Boyd this week, can we offer up our first draft pick in the coming draft.

I'm thinking of the kid, what a great role model Fletch would be and Boyd would get to be the only kid who played in the same team as his Dad at AFL level.

And if it happens this week he can get Fletch some socks and hankies for Sunday.

They weren't until about two years ago, when the AFL were challenged on it. It is now possible, but is subject to an individual review by the AFL first.

Thanks HM. Any of those F/S performances anything to get excited about? Not sure of the standards of leagues or whether those who have come before have performed similarly

HM - all your hard work gone.  Can't believe they couldn't save it?  Was there a crash and all lost, or just an upgrade?

Burky33 - if you went to Box Hill you would have seen Jydon Neagle play, how did he go?

yes saw him and he looks to have good hands

spent a long time on the bench because i think he was the 23rd man ?? is there a sub rule in the vfl?

reminds me a bit of his old man but was not in the play enough to get any gauge.

I do have a mate from Walla Walla who raves about him and knows his footy.

Robbo mentioned on 360 just before that losing the picks causes issues for father son and that if we don’t have a first or second round we can’t use them to pick our father sons, and we can’t trade in to get the appropriate picks to get the father sons.

Anyone know if this is correct?

Certainly worrying. Would hate to lose a Long over that!

There's some rules about adoption that the boy has to have been adopted by a certain age (12 ?).
To stop the obvious rorting that could occur with promising teenagers

Robbo says we can't - Emma Q says we can - you can believe Slobbo if you like.

Surely with the thousands of dollars per day we were spending on lawyers they would have sorted this out as part of the deal. If it was missed its another major stuff up by the club!!!!!

Very hard to say.  I only really pay any attention to results in the TAC or state champs or similar to determine whether a kid is any good or not.  Lots of the country leagues, in particular, are struggling for numbers and a kid might be playing against adults at age 15, or a side might just not be able to put a 22 together each week - standards vary wildly and it's hard to judge.  Some like the Ovens Murray, or metro leagues like the EDFL are worth paying a bit of attention to for younger blokes, but in general, large grains of salt are in order.

This is one of the reasons why I generally only go into any detail with the older kids.  With the younger - well, first step for them is getting into rep sides and the TAC/u18 pathway, and if they're not kicking goals or regularly featuring in the best in their local league, that ain't going to happen.

In very general terms - this year, Neagle and Clothier are both marginal prospects, late-round or rookie.  Thompson won't get drafted, Williams has spent most of the year (he's 19) in the VFL 2s, and Fields is running around in the SANFL 2s last I heard.

Of the future guys

- I've heard mixed reports on Long, some say he's top tier material others that he was promising but has stagnated a bit.  He was selected for the NT u18 side as an underager though, which is promising.

- Harvey Daniher was apparently one of NSWs better players in the u16 champs last year, so he's as firmly on the draft track as it is possible to be at his age, bearing in mind NSW is generally not all that talent-rich and being one of their best is not the same as being one of the best from WA or Vic Metro etc.

- Callum Daniher did a knee this year and hasn't played much, I think (from not very much knowledge, mind you) that Harvey is rated higher than him.  But again, I really know very little about this kid.

- Tom Wallis has some big wraps and was in the Metro u16 squad, so again, on the track, but he didn't feature in the goalkickers or bests, so either he wasn't selected, he didn't stand out, or else he was injured (I've heard Metro lost a lot of players to injury over the u16 comp, so far from impossible.)

- From what I've heard, Matthew is the most highly rated of the Neagles.  Not sure of his exact age (15 or 16 I think) or his year of eligibility, or whether he's zoned to NSW or Vic Country in state (presumably NSW like Jydon, but I'm funny things happen with zoning and it might not be true)

- Jett Bewick is one there's some hope for, don't think he's stood out as much as Wallis though

So in the years of draft penalties, that gives us not very much f/s-wise this draft, though Clothier outside the regular list might be an option.  Next year the options are Jake Long, Callum Daniher (who is a big mystery to me), and I think Nathan Neagle, but I don't think Nathan has stood out as much as some of his brothers.  We'll see if Callum makes the Rams squad and Nathan makes the Bushrangers team anyway, that'd be a start.

Naturally enough, it's only once we're back in the regular draft order that we start to get buried under likely options.  Depending on Matthew Neagle's exact age, we might have as many as three f/s possibilities in 2015, with Daniher, Wallis and him.  Even if he's only 15 now, then that leaves Daniher and Wallis in 2015, and possibly M Neagle and Bewick in 2016.

HM, apparently

I haven't heard what either Robbo or Emma have had to say about the whole thing (I didn't even realise we'd had our 2014 first rounder bumped to the end of the round, wtf?), but in general, when it comes to draft stuff, I'd believe what Emma said over what Robbo said approximately 6368471 times out of 10.

Edit: however, it's long established that picks you trade in can't be used for father/sons.

I can understand believing Emma.

But on the off chance that Robbo is right, what do you think of the merit (assuming he turns out to be good) of Long playing VFL for EFC in 2015 and nominating til the 2015 draft? If he was drafted in 2014 I assume he wouldn’t pay much in his first year anyway.

You won't like this HM.

The AFL confirmed the additional selection which could be pick 19 - handed to them after intense negotiations - could not be used for father-son selections.

"They have a pick after Round 1 but that pick has been inserted into the national draft so it cannot be used on a father-son," AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said.

"They have no father-son rights for Rounds 1 and 2, and cannot bid on another club's father-son players."

The Bombers were only aware they could not use the additional pick for father-son selections on Wednesday, and were less than impressed.
