Former #10 Sam Weideman

It says plenty about the type of tall forwards the club has recruited in the last 4-5 years:

Wright - Non-physical tall forward
Jones - Non-physical tall forward
Weideman - Non-physical tall forward

These are Dodoro selections/trades. It’s scandalous that he couldn’t see that this group lacks the physical presence, want to compete and ability to take contested marks. Caddy is a step in the right direction, whether you class him as a pure tall forward at 193cm, and how much credit you give Dodoro or Rosa I’m not sure.

By the end of 2025 it isn’t too much of a stretch to think that the aforementioned trio may not be at the club. If so we have a massive vacuum in the tall forward department…

I’m concerned that Dodoro is gone and Weid is still not delisted.

Yes, but why keep him?

Yeah good shout. There’s definitely been a trend there.

For say your medium tall who is more there to provide intelligent leading options and use their footy IQ to slip into pockets of space it’s probably not as important to be overtly physical i.e. your Gunston, Langford types. Albeit you obviously don’t want to be a complete weakling either.

But for your genuine key pillars I reckon it’s imperative that you can rely on them to halve contests by holding their ground in marking situations and occasionally winning them, especially when it’s kicked advantage side.

I think you should have a look at video of some of Jones’s matches. He is not “non-physical” - he tackles hard, and takes the odd pack mark, too.

Drops too many marks when the defender puts body pressure on him. Doesn’t accept or absorb physical contact in a marking contest well enough. He’s a non-physical key forward. Defensive pressure is different to being able to stand up to the physical nature of being a key position player. The balance of the tall forward stocks is not right in terms of there is no hulking, strong contested marking beast like a Harry McKey or a Jesse Hogan. The fact Sam Draper, who is a ruckman, is probably the most consistent and reliable player in terms of at least competing and at a minimum bringing the ball to ground for our small forwards (don’t get me started on that) says a lot.

Mate, it’s over for him.
He doesn’t have it at this level.

9 years in the system for 76 games.

Wasn’t the list management team’s call to bring him in the first place!

Who’s decision was it? Brad’s?

I’m starting to think that Brad’s judgement insofar as it relates to footballing matters may not be particularly strong.

Brad’s and others within the football department at that point in time who had a connection with Sam.

i.e. Josh Mahoney

It doesn’t pay to be a physical forward at all. AFL have screwed the game for anyone who goes in hard, even if your eyes are on the ball.
