How much weight would the AFL put into Draper being unrestricted?
The AFL do what they want. I don’t think it plays a role.

Thats all true, but if he was Clubman, then he didnt have to leave, amd certainly not in this manner.
So yes, the administration is Essendon’s fault, but the decision to leave is 100% on Draper.
He’s going to a well run club.
I realise that doesn’t narrow it down, comparitively.
Could it be that we offered him more guaranteed money in his contract but less than Brisbane overall?
And the reason why we aren’t getting the band 1 compo is because of the difference in what’s guaranteed?
Draper is likely just backing himself in to perform well enough to earn the full contracted amount.

I think West Coast will trade for Starcevich. That pick 19 will go to the Lions and that will be how the AFL get around the issue of diluting the compensation for Allen. We are the collateral damage because West Coast will get pick 2 and Starcevich for nothing and the Lions will now have pick 19 and 20 and our compensation pick will end up 21.

By all reports I have seen, including Cal’ who said it was confirmed, Draper’s offer at Brisbane was $100k+ more than ours.
Everything else is willfully buying into conspiracy. Allen getting paid more by Brisbane than Draper isn’t within our control.

Maybe he’s just been offered more money (as reported) combined with the fact he’s considered a year younger.
Though I realise that’s a very unpopular opinion around here.
Not that we’ll ever truly know one way or another.

It is but the hell with fair. I want us benefiting from every crack in the system.
Back-to-back premiers are raiding bottom 4 sides without having to give up a single pick. They’ll get overs now for Starcevich in a trade vs going as a FA, helped by a freebie pick given to WCE.
Where we can hopefully also work the rules to our advantage is if we’re able to get Fiorini as a FA without it affecting our compo pick.
I’m not particularly interested in trading for Fiorini but he’s decent steak knives if it’s essentially him + pick 20 for Draper.

Australian Rules Football is a great sport - or it was until the greedy self-promoting, profit-maximising businessmen of the AFL hijacked it. I dream of the day when the AFL is destroyed (or destroys itself) and our great game is free again of their pernicious influence.

We’ve just done the equivalent of a straight swap of pick 6 for pick 20. All due to incompetence. If there’s a club that can afford mistakes like this it’s the one that hasn’t won a final in 21 years. What an embarrassment.

The killer is that it was probably us helping out North and StK to maximise their FA compensation that cooked us here. We helped the AFL create an “adjustment factor” for underperforming teams to maximise their compensation, and in doing so created a situation where they could add an “adjustment factor” to our compensation to screw us.
How? If we get Fiorini as a free agent, pick 20 gets downgraded. Not sure why we’d want a 28 year old fringe player anyway. All we’d be achieving is helping Gold Coast free up a bit of cap space.

Just because we overpay for our free agents doesn’t mean Brisbane have to do the same.
It sure would be nice if there was some transparency around FA contracts though.
I’d be very surprised if Drapers contract is all guaranteed given all of his injury troubles.

Probably still a better deal than North did last year though..
Would’ve been interesting though. I’m far from convinced Brisbane would have offered enough to trigger band 1 in guaranteed money.
