Former #2 Big Sammy Draper

I feel very neutral about this.

Goodbye Sam.

Glad we’re no longer relying on him to put in good ruck performances and instead counting on his little mercurial patches.

one of the great frustrating players at this club

Yep, I’m sure he will become a far better player at Brisbane. I’m glad we have become a feeder club to the reigning premiers.

Still think he’s a bit of a dog. But also, now I’m not too sure the club was eager to keep him anyway.

My main annoyance is the stuff up on his UFA status. Seems like a pretty poor mistake from the club.

the 30 for 30 coming from dodoro to the rosa era will probably have 5 minutes on how dodoro structured his deals

It unfortunately will continue until Brad gets the arse… hopefully the club wake up soon

What has this got to do with Brad?

After not renewing my membership, I was hopeful I’d feel regret based on improvement. However, it’s just getting worse and worse.

Reckon Draper is only worth pick 20 for entertainment value, not worth it for his football skills

I see it like this. The club takes a risk on a soccer kid, perserveres, retain him in his development and injury years (8 games in 4 years between 2017-2020, only 60% of games between 2021 and 2025 inclusive). Patience. Learning. No complaints. He loves the club. An investment I know. Then off I go to the bright sunny clubrooms where success is almost guaranteed. No matter that the club did what they could to support and develop me. I’m going to where the sun shines brighter. The Karma Bus never stops running. When he wasnt perfect the club stood by him. When the club’s not perfect, he’s moved on.

West Coast bonus pick is AFTER all Band 2 Compensation picks.

Captaincy aside Merrett is copping enormous punishment for a bloke who literally bled for the club and rarely put in a bad quarter let alone a bad game. But big Drapes, nah cool mate.

Draper’s not going to Mitchell. But they’re both snakes.

I’m not quite understanding the problem here.

Why is this a ā€˜black mark against current admin’?

What should we have done to get a better pick other than increase (match?) the Brisbane offer?

If we really wanted to keep Draper, we’d just tap into our massive pool of money and pay him. We didn’t which suggests we were happy to let him go. Can’t complain with end of first round compo if we were happy not to pay up. If we were around the ballpark of Brisbane, $ wise then he wanted out regardless

Obviously that’s the sticking point for a lot of people, the irrational but understandable sticking point. Be better if they were leading with it though instead of the comprehensive character assassination and whitewash of 12 years of being the sole bright light always on in the Essington darkness.

If we’d ensured Draper was RFA we could have forced Brisbane to match. As it was he accepted a lower amount so we only got band 2

In 5 years I might forgive him and admire his achievements.

I liked Drapes and a bit sad to see him go. But seriously his Achilles is epically rooted. Pick at the end of first round is ok. The bloke plays maybe 1 good game every 5, but only actually plays once every so often anyway.

I’ve heard the stats on returning from an Achillies are very low, so he probably isn’t worth keeping anyway.

Typical Blitz reaction to the compo, but we can turn it into something good imo. Plenty of good draftees waiting in the wings that can play.

But he was a RFA wasn’t he? Thats why he could move.

Wasn’t the sequence

Draper becomes RFA

Brisbane offer

We match and he has a choice to make or we don’t match and he goes

If we offer first and it’s too generous Brisbane don’t match and he stays a bomber

I get that the scale of the deal triggers the pick as deemed by the AFL but the risk he stays on a great deal is too high

Apart from the AFL deciding essendon & west coast pick, what sequence did WC use to get pick 2?
