Former #29 Jye Menzie - thru 2025

The shoulder injury may explain some of his performances last year, but it didn’t explain how slow he looked. He ran like he was wearing lead boots.

It was noticeable against Port how much better he was moving this year, and really clear last night.

You try running at full pace with a crook shoulder and see how you go!

The only fkn horrendous thing is your take on his game. Out of interest would 6 goals constitute a pass mark, or maybe 8?

Menzie showed smarts and craft. He is a good read of the ball in flight and positions himself well for marks. He also knows when to get out the back and use pace to run into goal, with the long kick from Draper, looking like a set play.

I don’t look only at stats incl scoreboard impact. He kicked a few against a totally hapless team. I think his finishing is hugely problematic for someone without significant pace size or agility who will struggle to get a huge amount of looks (everyone on here agreed with that before last night and I’m not sure last night puts it to bed).

I’m getting excoriated by all and sundry for voicing an opinion. I’d love him to kick 35 this year and prove me wrong. Let’s see.

In the interest of being more measured, I’ve actually always thought he had something to work with, I think his skills by hand and foot are above average and I think he could have more value working up the ground as he always seems to use it well around the ground. It’s in front of goals where he’s not at the level IMO.

(I’m just not sure he’ll beat Perkins or Alwyn for a HFF spot, I liked him for a quarter at HBF last season but he won’t dislodge Roberts now, and I’d be happy to trial him over Shiel but we know Brad won’t do that).

I never have. I have defended him every time.

Apart from that, I think I can see now why they kept playing him last year. I think when he first got to us, he was definitely a stay at home small forward who rarely if ever left the fwd 50. Last year they had him running the lines the entire length of the ground and it is showing in his endurance and speed. He has always gottent to where the ball was, something that can’t really be taught, but last year with the shoulder was frustrating because he was so fumbly. This year with the shoulder fixed, he is definitely cleaner and the experience has improved his game. It is also why the club gave him the extension, faith that with a good shoulder again he could get back to an improved version of that 2023 player.

Having said all that, he still needs to continue to perform, not for the sake of the doubters, but for his own success. One game at a time.

Must play three small forwards.

One of them will always get opportunities, this time it was Menzie and he was good enough to grab his chance.

Really pleased he had a night out. I thought last week was his best game for us, but last night showed what he can bring, and showed why the club had faith in him.
I’m not Nostradamus but if Menzie can become a weapon it will be amazing for the club and its supporters.
Seems like if one of Kako/Caddy/Menzie/Perkins are threatening along with a resting mid/Martin/Durham and a Langford/Draper it’s gonna be a nightmare for opponents.

Edit: Gresham looking the goods the last 2 matches too

Menzie? Christ

Pretty much.

And Kako and [Menzie] allow Gresham to play his link man role further up the ground (which he is quite good at, albeit an “almost” night last night ).

In all seriousness,

What had Alwyn EVER showed that would even bring him into this conversation. That alone screams out your bias against Jye.

I want Davey to succeed but he has shown close to nothing in almost every single game he has played.

Do you mean like every top 4 team does??? Like people with half a brain have been saying for years?

But nah Brad, let’s go into round 1 with 1 small forward who is a debutant. You can’t script it

I was super impressed with Menzie’s marking last night, and under close attention a couple of times. They were strong grabs. I’d never noticed that as part of his game before. The shoulder reco has certainly made a difference in that area.

To be fair to BDB, blitz has been collectively mashing their teeth and wailing every time menzie is selected.

l have noticed his marking previously. He reads the drop of the ball very well and makes good position, using body strength to shift opponents out of the way legally.

Menzie, 2025 Coleman Medallist.

Menzie shot up to averaging 1.7 goals per game.

Draper and Merrett currently leading efc goal kicking - with both on ball, chance for Menzie to hit the lead next week. Imagine him kicking 7 - like that game Reimers tore Gold coast a new one.
