Former #33 Alwyn Davey Jnr

and he definitely didn’t have the running power drive or size to be an outside mid.

HFF. It was where he’d play, and where he needed a couple of years development, and work on size and furness. But EFC pigeon holes him as “small forward” until last month

So that brings to a close the Davey brothers Essendon era. @THE_DON1 whst are your thoughts around where the boys ultimately ended up? Obviously Jayden impacted by injuries. Alwyn never really rediscovered early form after some good early signs.

Unfortunately I’m not sure what other role he could have carved out for himself at AFL level if not that one.

I have seen some mention wing but he would be absolutely miles off having the aerobic capacity required to sustain the two way running to carry out that role.

Half back perhaps at a pinch but any team able to isolate him and play through his opponent would have had a fair bit of success I reckon.

Edit - ahhh you’re saying HFF vs FP

Such a sad time of the year. Always feel for players who have been delisted.

ADJ played a lot of games before he was ready and then regressed under the current coaching panel. It’s not unique to him. For the past decade players come in and look their best in the first couple of years.

Hope he can get another go at Port with Jayden.

Thanks for your efforts ADJ.

I know I’m on a bit of an island with this one but I do always like players with pace who can use the ball. Reckon he might be a late developer and really should’ve had some senior opportunities this year IMO.

Wishing ADJ all the best but yeah, never showed the appetite for contest that we need.

I’m on this island. Likely we never get a chance to find out if we could have been right

His move to half back came too late. He actually looked more competitive in defence and his speed and ball use were pretty handy back there. Too bruise free as a forward and it ultimately cost him his spot. Hopefully he sticks at it and gets another go somewhere down the line. Has some traits.

Alwyn is such a tough one as he showed plenty in his draft year enough to earn AFL Academy selection and played every game for Vic Metro and get a National Combine invite. Alwyn has never lacked in talent and ability but I think like many young aboriginal players hasn’t settled into an AFL level lifestyle.

Honestly though I think the main thing that’s held Alwyn back is pardon my French a bit of ■■■■, he had enough level of competitiveness for Oakleigh and was even praised for it by his coach at the time but that certainly hasn’t followed him to AFL level.

I hope he gets another shot at AFL down the line the AFL is better for it when more aboriginal players are playing at the top level.

Thanks Alwyn

I agree. I just don’t understand given all our injuries why he wasn’t given at least one game, especially when others who were obviously going to be shown the door were given that opportunity.

So long young Davey and all the best for your future endeavours, whatever and wherever they may be. While he was timid in his approach he would have offered us more than Menzie or Gresham and should have played in the place of one of them over the course of the season.

Alwyn Davey Jr would need to be an exceptionally late developer, he’s well into his 40s now.

Maybe you mean Alwyn Davey III ?

You think his brother getting delisted would have been the kick up the bum he needed eh

All the best davey only have your self to blame

That is funny. The same could also be said about you. Welcome back.

I wonder if Sheeds could have got the best out of him because Scott certainly couldn’t.

I agree with this but come to a different conclusion.

I always got the feeling ADJ operated like he always thought it was just going to happen for him. Like he knew he and his brother were anointed from a few years out and he would eventually own a spot in our 22. As in he played like a rock star who didn’t necessarily work as hard as others mightve. In other words I agree with that attitude/intensity part.

I feel like other clubs can develop through/address that. He may have needed his “GAJ moment” where he got a wake up call. We didn’t give it to him.

Perhaps not debuting Rd 1 Year 1 might have been good for him too to build that hunger.

He definitely had the talent IMO.

Just my theory though.

Had some talent, but how much?

Ultimately smallish, not lightning pace and not much kicking penetration - you’d need to be pretty amazing at something.

Still find it weird he didn’t get one single game this year, but I don’t think there was any huge well of untapped talent.

Some of the hype around the draft was pretty crazy but early signs were the brothers sliding on ‘22 draft night. How many pick 40+ actually end up even playing 10 games let alone making a career out of it?

ADJ can say he played a number of games in the AFL which is more than most
