Former #36 Jayden Davey

I think he will be delisted and moved to the rookie list but will have to show a fair up tick next year to stay on

Would be the stupidiest move to delist him knowing he was coming off a reco this year, what did we expect him to do?

Next year will be a fairest judge of his ability.

In terms of goal kicking nous, he seems to have it. Needs to make improvements in finding the ball and impacting off it.

I don’t agree with the ‘can’t get his body to a level required’ comment. He’s coming off an ACL. From what I can see he played 18 VFL games for 2024, which indicates he had his body fit every week.

He scored 17 goals and had a few very nice little games in the back half of the year where he got double digit possessions. Yes that’s not a massive bar, but for a guy who missed a year and turned 20 at the start of the season it’s a decent little introduction.

Depends. If we’re expecting to end up with a lot of decent draft picks and needed to clear senior list spots, it would make sense.

If we’re going to clean out the list a bit and don’t want to take too many really late picks, it’d be better to keep him on the senior list on a one year deal than draft a kid we’re not sure about on a two year deal.

If, for some godforsaken reason, we’re going to be tight for list spots because we’re keeping everyone, I’d rather re-rookie Weideman or Setterfield. Once a guy’s been delisted he’s a free agent for life, and it’s more likely that would come back to bite us with Davey than the other two (just because of his age).

All of the above assuming the intention is to keep him on the list in some form, of course.

There is no reason to delist him this year. We don’t have enough draft capital to replace him with a selection of young guys, and if you look at the dross being cut by other teams there’s nothing much worth using the list spot on at this stage. It’s not even a particularly good year for eligible free agents.

Just let him sit on the list and develop, there should be no rush with him. If he improves and earns a call up in 2025 then great.

You make some good points and I agree with you I want the kid to make it.
They may see the benefit of opening up as many spots as they can for the draft or it may be the statement of delisting and rerookie to get him to switch on

From the outside looking in…… it seems to be that if any player isn’t 110% committed on the training track, they’re gonna be delisted.

Which is why Menzie has been given a 1 year deal during the season.

And likely the reason we’re keen to offload Stringer in a trade.

yeah he probably needs a further preseason to reach full fitness

If we move him to the rookie list it’s because we need the spot for other list management moves. He’s unlikely to get poached by other clubs, so is the ideal type to expose to the market during that switch. Likely has little to do with his future, more that we need flexibility to make more moves.

Deleted due to oldness and a mistake ridden weekend

Ashcroft did his knee last year. Didn’t take him long to return this year and he has been a standout in the finals series.

Davey twins are clearly one of the more skilled players in the squad but their phobia of contact will get them delisted next year if not this year. You simply can’t get away with it at the top level.

And don’t give me that “they’re still young” bullshit. Just look at Watson, Moir, and Rogers.

They don’t have what it takes. It’s a pity but it is what it is.

This is about Jayden Davey…haven’t mentioned his brother at all so I don’t know why you’ve brought him into the discussion! Also this is about his recovery from his ACL…nothing to do with his phobia of contact or how hard he tackles or whatever! He played the entire year in the VFL as a 4th round pick 1 year after doing his fucken knee and people on here want him to be performing like Will Ashcroft and Sam Docherty! Chill out…there is nothing controversial to see here.

You’re saying he has been unlucky and he needs more time, and it’s silly to have certain expectations of him because he did his ACL.

I’m saying those expectations aren’t silly. 2.5 years to recover from ACL is unheard of, at least for me. That says a bit about him, considering he went to a private school, had early exposure to the AFL world at a young age - I’m not sure if he ever played in the NAB league but with his brother, he’d have known the certain expectations for making it at the AFL level almost better than anyone.

Apart from flashes of his skills, he has shown nothing that he deserves a spot on the list next year.

I hope he proves me wrong big time but I’m not holding my breath.

Completely missed my point, well done

I understand its not the norm for guys like docherty to miss 9 months ( I’ve done two ACLs)

Its also completely ridiculous the amount of time it took for Jayden to get back playing, or even training fully. Thats my point.

like how we cut Atkinson and Neagle.

Don’t get your point with Menzie. He was given 1 year only because he is rubbish

Longevity in footy is like walking a tightrope between being robust enough to take the inevitable hits, and being as agile as a mack truck. A lot of the aboriginal small forwards are incredibly light and agile early on and with the goal sense that is inate for them, they are standouts, but become a target.
Eddie Betts hit the sweet spot, with a medium body, could physically handle it, but the likes of Mossie and possibly Jayden they cannot bulk up enough. Then theres Tippa. IMO he just became too robust in the end, could run through a brick wall, but without the agility that comes from playing long term in that sweet spot of size like Betts he could not get back to where he was.

I guess the point is for Jayden, unless he can build up the body to give him confidence when push comes to shove, it might be a bridge too far at this level.

Jeez I hope he makes it. We really really need at least 1 great small forward.

I think you’ll find that was part of mozzie’s recovery plan
