Former #36 Jayden Davey

We had one in zac merret, remember he got booted from leadership because his standards were too high.
Now he is old and our captain and still nothing changed

Lol. That wasnt the reason Merrett wasnt in the leadership group. Why do people make ■■■■ up.

You’d be concerned if the coach wasn’t directing who stays on the list and who doesn’t.

Why was it ?

I think the coach needs to have input for sure, but it needs to be moderated against that of the list manager and recruitment.

I think it would depend on the club and the political weight of coach vs list manager. But I’d be flabbergasted if Brad wasn’t the final decision maker on who goes or stays on this list.

Yeah and tbh I’m not that worried if the coach is the final decision maker either tbh. A good list manager should imo build a list which supports what the coach is trying to achieve. Like I don’t think it should be an absolute veto vote, but it should be ticked off by them.

If a coach wants a player gone what’s the point of keeping him. He won’t be playing any senior games and will just hate his time at the club.

Jackson Merrett played 56 games over six seasons. Alwyn has played 20 games over two season, reckon Jayden deserves at least another season to see what he has got. He kicked 17 goals in VFL so he did something.

yep
A functional club would/should have the senior coach and list manager in absolute synch on what the list should be to achieve success. There must be robust discussion between them and others in that inner circle (assistants etc) aabout the players but in the end they reach an agreement, knowing you’ll get some things right and some things wrong.

But the expectations for being on the list must be clear and adhered to without fear or favour.

He did his knee early in his final year of high school around 2.5 years ago. We have a lot of apologists for a guy who just hasn’t got himself fit enough with the time he’s had at the club.

He did his ACL in his draft year…I think it was his second one. He spent his whole first year at the club in rehab and had a limited pre-season in his second. You can argue all you want about his attitude and will to be a professional AFL player, which is fine but physically he’s been dealt a ■■■■ sandwich in his first 2 years which makes him hard to judge right now. I think he’ll be rookied.

It took him almost 2 fkn years to get back into full training. It was ridiculous.

Meanwhile, sam docherty does an ACL round one (his third) and plays in the elimination final

yeah but crazy vossy…

your point stands though

You’re comparing a 1st/2nd year player to a senior player who is in the leadership group at his club! Yes it’s a fucken disgrace that Jayden was unable to recover from his ACL in less than a year…

Think the bigger issue is that players at our club recovering from long term injuries routinely let their bodies go.
Happened with Stringer, happened with Walla, happened with Mozzie, happened with Tex and happened with J Davey.
They all let themselves go to an extent during their rehab and it makes it so much tougher to properly return from.

There’s a common theme there!

I remember the hype around these two, sadly one can’t get his body to a level required and the other is a cat when it comes to any type of physical contact.

Oh well we still have Menzie, Guelfi and Gresham

There was a reason that their dad didn’t get drafted til he was 22ish, and that’s because before that he was (like his sons now) just too small. Small guys with skinny builds like theirs get brushed aside - and they know it. Alwyn had that few years of extra development, and was nuggetty and muscular when we got him, so was able to lay sticking tackles and had that little bit extra explosive speed off the mark.

I see no reason why the twins wouldn’t be in the same boat. Physical development is the key for both of them, and patience will be required.

I am holding any judgement on Jayden. An ACL is a big recovery for any athlete, and probably worse for a developing young guy.

He’s had his first year now complete, he started to trust his body and find the ball a bit as he went through the season. Next year will be critical to show improvement and start to grow into a role that could see him make a debut.

He’s on a different timeline to his brother and we have room on the list to let him improve over the next year or two.
