If you think a paper saying "sudanese ruckman" is racist you probably need to sort yourself out

Seriously

If his dad were English they wouldn’t call him an English ruckman.

What if he was a ruckman from Ireland ?

If he came here with his family at the age of seven, I would doubt it.

Or does it because it apply to anyone other than an Australian born AFL player?

Don’t mention ‘the APEX gang’ in this thread.

Did you guys know Mike Pike was a Canadian ruckman? Me either. Strange that no one ever mentioned that.

But he was a Canadian citizen who came here as an adult to play football. How is that the same as someone who has been here since age 7?

I could understand if they wrote “Sudanese-born ruckman”, but even that is irrelevant to a story about a tribunal hearing.

It’s not the same at all. It was a just a joke.

Despite my flippant remark I actually agree the hun was deliberately racial profiling young gach. It fits perfectly with the agenda they have been pushing that all African kids are violent thugs.

That’s not entirely true, if a paper wrote an article on origins of ruckman around the league or during the multicultural round, all good.

But a Melbourne paper pointing it out at a time where the city is having a violence issue in the community from which he is from in the context of an article about a violent on field act can only be taken as an attempt to imply.

It’s all about context.

Rubbish.

Why did the article mention he played for Vic Country? Totally irrelevant to the article, and no doubt a pathetic attempt to link Gach's actions with the ice epidemic sweeping rural Victoria.

That’s pretty farkin funny Dill.

I think they would have mentioned it anyway, even if there weren’t violence issues.

It adds a bit of… flavour to the article and the word Sudanese is probably click bait.

I think you are suggesting they are being provocative, rather than racist.

Yeah, pretty much

I was literally reminded of that everytime I turned on the TV and saw the Swans.

Yep that’s the point, saying he is Sudanese is not in itself racist but in the context of the article it leaves the reason open to interpretation. If it was Jamar it would be ex Melbourne ruckman Mark Jamar, not half Russian ruckman Mark Jamar. Unless of course it was 1940.

I'm not completely sure how the whole racism thing works, but what does his Sudanese background have to do with the article and why it was deemed necessary to include?

Well, theres a few reasons. With a name like Gach readers are probably curious where he is from. It probably generates discussion too because some people will automatically assume he is dangerous because he is Sudanese and others will defend him by saying he is still learning how we do things in Australia, tough upbringing etc. Papers gonna be papers.

I hate the big papers for obvious reasons but its certainly not racist mentioning where he is from, Im sure if Emma Quayle mentioned it blitzers wouldn’t care. If it was Heppel theyd mention he was from Traralgon and if it was Hooker theyd mention he was from WA.

One of our players did something stupid and got bad press. Nitpicking the paper for how they reported it just avoiding the issue at hand. We should be grateful they didnt even mention the sorry saga.

There is no reason whatsoever to mention his race. It has nothing to do with the topic of the article which is about a report for a headbutt during a football game. It’s a sad state of affairs when people feel the need to point out racial difference when it has no bearing on anything.

“It probably generates discussion too because some people will automatically assume he is dangerous because he is Sudanese and others will defend him by saying he is still learning how we do things in Australia, tough upbringing etc”

Generating discussion is a weak excuse, especially if your going to justify by bringing up lazy stereotypes. Generating division might be a better term to use in this situation.

There is nothing unusual about being Sudanese. He’s not an exotic curiosity, he’s a person and he deserves to be treated like anyone else.

Although I tend to agree with all this, I suspect the reason for putting it in was more benign. I think most journalists have a list of things they’ve written down or remember about each player, and they add that in automatically to appear knowledgeable. So the journalist writes the article, knows hardly anyone know who the hell Gach is, so he puts in the two things he remembers to give context and appear knowledgeable - that he is Sudanese and was AA in the championships.

That said, I believe although it was probably benign intentions, given the context and the fact he’s Australian this is pretty stupid actions.

It was Tom Goodwin he head butted wasn’t it?
