Ok. Well that threw my memories out the window. Must have been under Bill Stephen then. Still, I can remember him taking a screamer in his first game and thinking this guy could be anything.
He legitimately puts fear into opposition players and that’s something we’ve lacked in our team for years. If he can help learn to block and crash for 2MP he’ll become an asset
Vander played about 80 games and was 22 or so when Sheeds started.
I heard him say once that he never wanted to play VFL and it was only because of Bill Stephen that he ever signed up. Just wanted to be a Tradie like his Dad, play a bit of local footy and drink ■■■■.
which is pretty much what he did no?
Wat ?
Van Der Haar debuted in '77.
Played 18 games that year, followed by 17, then 15, then 15 again before Sheedy even arrived at the club.
Not sure on the relevance of this comparison.
Yep, suppose you are right, in that he played mostly in Melbourne and still had a drink and smoked; and he did a bit of work with his Dad. We used to see him often in the Marsh after his Bomber playing days, as he stayed at a local pub when he was doing an install of a hot-tub or spa anywhere in the area. Great bloke to have a drink with, though he spent a lot of time outside having a smoke, I was surprised he was still so fit with all his smoking and drinking.
Tough when there are so many old Bomber Supporters on BBlitz, who still have such great memories of those days when Vanders would fly high, and those games vs Peter Knights is something I will never forget.
The relevance is that Vander was not a guy who was going to show you his best running around in the 2s. He was built for seniors football. That is Voss atm. Keeping him in the vfl is just wasting his and our time. Play him ffs.
‘He’s coming to get ya!’
Not under Bill Stephen. Vanda came straight into the side and never missed a game under Stephen. Barry Davis wasn’t too happy with him due to his lack of professionalism and he might have spent a few games in the twos at one stage but he was hardly languishing there when Sheedy arrived. What Sheedy did do was realise that you got the best of Vanda by treating him differently to the rest of the list - letting him do his thing with grog and junk food as long as he kept performing.
He’s an Alfa
From an old workmate of mine - about 30 years his junior - he’s a handsy creep.
Alfa? As in looks great but very unreliable?
Or alpha
He’s the rate of change of angular velocity ?
It’s a hugely different era of football/sport/culture - but hopefully you’re correct.
The comparison - across the decades - is that Brad seems to also work with players via their personality to bring the best to the team.
There is a huge cultural gap, but the fundamentals remain relevant in context.
Hopefully…
VOSS not being a good mark is a bit overblown.
You rarely see him out marked by opposition, unless it’s a poor kick and miles above his head.
yeh he can double grab or prefers to take it on the chest which will be difficult at AFL level. but he still get his 6,7,8 marks a game which is comparable to Weid when he was playing and he also does enough in the contest to bring the ball to ground.
If he plays against the swans I would want to see the following:
Aggressive tackling any bin chickens. He gets quite a few tackles in forward 50.
Run through Rampe any chance he can get in a marking contest if a bin chickens player is willing to drop in the hole
wouldn’t mind him running further up field to midfield /wing to get a kick as is a great kick forward might surprise opposition.
get in a wrestle with Merretts tagger and rip his guernsey in half so Merrett is free for 5 minutes.
kick a goal, something weid has struggled with.
