Former #39 Patrick Voss - false messiah

1 person does not make an acquisition, everyone involved, bin

We did it to James Stewart

But not just after “luring” him to the club.

How many other teams do you think pitched to him? I can’t see any other team going down that desperate road

In general, you don’t cut a contract a year after signing them. I know it’s great to be ruthless and all that jazz, but doing so can get you out of favour the next time you’re dealing with the player’s agent.
They do hold quite a bit of power and sometimes have to pull levers (media or other ways) just to get their players where their preference is.

It can also backfire with other new signings who all of a sudden start looking at other alternatives because you’re not willing to see out the contract that was signed.

Schache is in a similar situation at Melbourne. No chance to get a look in, stuck in the VFL, but is seeing out his contract. It just isn’t a common occurrence in the AFL. I wish it were though. Would be good to give a bit more power to the club somehow.

It’s all just a reflection of our horse crap list management for going there at all.
Everyone in the country knew he is a spud.
Then better yet, Brad kept playing him despite horrid results.

You’d have a good case to say to any manager, he’s still getting his cash but I can’t work with this and sell it to fans.

You mean, in the same year Francis, Schache and Weideman all found new homes?

I just feel it is a bad look, and if I was a player manager I would definitely tell my clients about clubs who delisted a player partway through their first deal.

No arguments from me on that. I said at the time it was a terrible move. Better no spare tall than him (or Voss & Baldwin).

I just don’t think so. As I said, if I’m a player agent, I’m definitely warning my clients who are considering club X that they have cut players mid-deal. I mean, obvisouly not if they’re a champion, but if the player is fringe, definitely. Its a risk they need to be aware of; I’d almost say a player manager would be derelict in their duties if they didn’t tell them.

How precious are we in the AFL community.
Many other sports in the world do things like sign and waive players to get out of bad deals with below par performers.

But oh no, I’d hate to upset someone.
It’s a business, just like any other workplace, you fail to perform and hit standards, KPI’s, or any other metric… goodbye.

Hell, it might even wake some others up that just because you have a contract doesn’t mean you can coast along and think you’re safe.
Looking at you Mason Redman

I was talking with one of the officers at work yesterday and we got around to the subject of football. He mentioned that he was a Freo supporter and we started talking about the draft and how I have never really looked at Freo at the start of a season and said “There is the team to beat for the flag”. There is just something about them that says to me that it will be a long long time before they win a flag.

Anyway, the subject of Patrick Voss came up and I gave my opinion that Vossy is a good honest footballer, but he isn’t likely to play more than 50-60 games in his career, which considering the average career is about 30 games would actually be a very good effort.

The interesting bit for me was an almost off the cuff comment he made about why Voss wasn’t getting AFL games at Essendon. It was the first I had ever heard of it, and considering how much time I have spent on this site, I would have thought it may have been mentioned here already if it was common knowledge. I’m not sure I want to come out and say why directly on a public forum, but would be happy for a mod to pm me and between us decide whether it would be appropriate to post.

I’m sorry to do the whole I know something but not gonna tell you what thing, because I know how bloody annoying it is when others on here do it, but there is certainly a degree of respecting a players privacy about this. Suffice to say that I think that if this information is true, and I have no reason to think it may not be, then I believe it reflects quite poorly on the club, his team mates and staff alike.

Dont think it even needs to be said as its irrelevant.

The reason he wasnt getting games is because he is only just now afl standard, and probably wasnt in his final year with us.
He just wasnt good enough at that point in time.

Or just put allegedly in every second sentence like the communication specialists do and you’ll be fine

Strange comments seeing as he was an emergency 3 times, someone goes down in a warm up and he would have played.

Won the BNF for the VFL side in 2023, was leading goalkicker then was delisted less than a month later.

Strange. Theres got to be a reason and its clearly not something people want to shout from the rooftops. Lets move on then. We have 5 new players coming in, Kako looks good.

The problem with Weid/Jones/Wright combinations was that they’re too soft. You need a key forward with a bit of ■■■■ that puts the fear of god in the opposition in contests.

Hopefully that is Gerryn and Caddy.

Voss might still be good enough, but he is more of a backup at Freo for the time being. Treacy and Jackson are both very good players.
Treacy was instrumental for Freo this year, If Freo sent Luke Jackson into the ruck possibly his best position then could make room for Vossy up forward, would need to send Sean Darcy to Geelong for a couple first rounders though.

The 200cm version of VOSS is better than the 194cm version.

I thought it was pretty much common knowledge here that Voss loved his nightlife a bit too much. Freo might be able to make him change his ways. Maybe not. Not our problem

‘The nightlife’ is narrowed to Fridays and Saturdays in Perth.

Can’t imagine Revolver would survive in WA

I don’t think he was alone there.
My read was he got the bullet so others would wake up
