Former #39 Patrick Voss - false messiah

Im wondering how many scoring opportunities ans scoring assists Voss needs to average before he gets a game . His conversion rate may be poor, but heseems to get involved

I don’t think Weiderman will get games in 2024. Voss will know the role well enough. Jones will be healthy. Hunter will be healthy.

That’s three options who each have shown more upside than Weed. The only reason the guy is getting games is the alternative options are injured or too green.

I don’t think the coaches consider Voss as competing with Weiderman. He’s more likely to get a game if Langford or Stringer miss. I don’t think he’s a genuine key position player, more a third tall type who can provide tacking pressure.

pre draft his tank was one of his strengths.
Basically was a utility def/fwd/mid that had played all positions ok. raw talent. hadn’t specialized in a role.

from draft central
A tall talent capable of playing in all areas of the ground, Voss has found ways to bring his best traits in a variety of roles, none more so than his strength, making a habit of fending off opponents and laying heavy tackles.

STRENGTHS:

  • Contested marking
  • Strength/physicality
  • Tackling
  • Versatility
  • Reading the play

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Kicking
  • Agility

Where Voss does excel is in his marking, both up forward and in the backline. He consistently wins marking contests, even against taller opposition as he fights for front position and holds it well, nudging opponents away to protect the drop of the ball. His read of the play from defence means he can time when he drifts across perfectly and rarely gets spoiled, with his grip strong enough to handle the ball cleanly amid most contact.

Voss should aim to be like Taylor Walker. Same height at 194cm. I’d have him any day if he could be like Walker - tough, good mark and good goal kicker.

Yep, I’d be handing him a hard drive full of tex edits for the off season and saying this is who you need to becomes offensively. Leading patterns, marking and working on your kicking to make it a weapon like tex.

simply must play.

At this point I’d go Menzie in the ruck and bring Voss in to play as the second/third tall

Genuinely nothing to lose playing him ahead of Weideman

Not forgetting that he thought he was going to be playing NRL not AFL, as a junior.

I don’t know if I’m watching the same guy as all of you are. He’s a very ordinary mark. Which would be his bread and butter.

Hes been poor recently but was marking really well earlier in the year

I wonder if he’s still working on that thing since Rd 2.

Yeh he’s like Taylor Walker, but maybe tougher, Big Bad Bustling Barry hall was the same size 194cm, Dont think he’s quite as agile as Barry was, but he has similar aggression. hard to find a bigger guy that tackles like VOSS does in AFL.

Even when he kicked a few in the first few games it was not from marking the footy. Averages four marks per game. Regularly drops regulation marks. He may well become a third tall option who provides good forward pressure. He is not a genuine key position option.

He had a poor game on Sunday.

But he’s been in decent form prior to that.

Seems to always try and take it on the chest.

At AFL he’s going to have to give a good contest overhead, whether that’s his preference or not.

He’s not doing that very well. Which limits how and where he could be of any use in the AFL.

I think there’s a player in there, eventually, but I’d love to see him take more overhead.

A rookie who can’t mark will clearly provide more than weid.

Voss’ goals have come from really good positioning, in a one-on-one contest.

He always positions himself in front of his opponent…. So when there is a quick kick inside 50, or the ball drops short he’s always in a position to mark the ball.

He also leads at the ball. Which is extremely rare these days for Key forwards, who prefer to sit behind their opponent, so they can run and jump over a pack.

Voss is 20 year old, lone key forward, who plays for a team that’s 16th on the ladder. That’s just the reality.

Not reality tho, Jorgensen’s played every game as a marking forward.
